257 or 270 weatherby

Im looking for a good flat shooting deer round. I was leaning towards the 257.

Is a 120 grain bullet enough out to 500 to 600 yards? or farther?

Im interested in input. I have been shooting a 280 for 4 years and I like it but I want a gun for deer and a gun for elk. I like the 6.5's a lot also and am having a hard time deciding what to build.

Between the two I'll take the 270 and it isn't a two horse race. The 270 Weatherby is definitely the absolute best cartridge that never gets mentioned in regards to the best all-around hunting cartridge in North America. Check out the LR ballistics of those heavy Bergers at the speeds that Weatherby will push them out of a 26 in tube.

My next gun will be a 6.5x284, I think the ultimate deer antelope rifle. Use a 2506 right now but like the 6.5x284 stats better.

I love my 26" .257 WBY.- Drops deer and antelope like a bad habit. The .270 WBY is a better choice if elk are thrown into the mix. If you have your heart set on one of those two, I would go with the .270 just for that reason. If you are also considering a 6.5mm, the 6.5 X .284 is also a great round to go with as mentioned. You might even consider the .264 Win. Mag????

Its just going to be a Muley rifle. I am wanting to do a build and I want a good caliber that will do the 600 yard shots and possible to 700. I hunt deer in open country with deep canyons. My 280 has taken one at 650 yards and 140 accubonds. I was going to go with a 6.5 cal but got looking at the weatherbys and it interested me.

went threw same thing few years back. I have 3 - 338 type elk rifles. 87 gr bullets at 3800 for varmits and fun. The 115-120 at 3400= the 270 in 130 grn and energy is same for both with these weights to 500 yrds

A good .257 bullet weighing 120 grains will have a B/C of about .40 (most won't). Whether you can get 3400fps with that bullet is something I've never seen. But have seen 3280fps with a 26" barrel. At 3300fps and a .40 B/C you are looking at about 1300ft.lb. of energy at 500 yards. The 270 mag is not at it's best with a 130 grain bullet. It wants a 150 to 160 grain bullet. The Hornaday IB has a B/C of .52, and will do an honest 3100fps. That calculates to over 1600ft.lb. of energy at 500 yards. (AA 3100 powder will push that 150 grain bullet 3200fps).
