243 win long range bullet

Hi question probably for the older generation of bench shooters, I acquired a rem 700 chambered in 243 win heavy barrel I'd like to see if I could compete a little with it , but I'm not sure what kind of match bullets worked without all the new hype calibers ,barrels and faster twists for the heavier than 100 grain match 6mm projectiles . Any suggestions would be great thanks in advance !!

While I'm no bench rest shooter I would like to add I have found the 95 grain Berger classic hunter to be exceptionally accurate out of my 9.25 twist 243 win.

I have ran through many 90-100 grain bullets, speer, Nosler, Hornady, none grouped as well as the Berger's have in this rifle. The BC is pretty fair given the weight class.

You might give them a try.

What twist do you have? New cartridges, barrels, and twists aren't all hype. Just sayin'

I shoot 87 VMAXs with great accuracy. I have a factory 9.125 twist in my Remington. I plan to test some 95gr Berger Classic Hunters.

What is your max distance? That's the biggest question. Some guys talk bench and it's only 200 yards. If you are under 500 yards it would be hard to beat a lite and fast hammer. Like the 70gr based on it being older I bet it has a 10 twist.
All the .243's I have setup love the nosler 95gr the best.

Try the 95 grain Sierra TMK. Kinda depends on your rifling twist.

Thanks for the feedback guys I do like Berger's , as well as noslers and Hornadys . I do have a 1-10 twist. I'd like to punch paper as far as I can, I love reloading so it's another challenge like we all like. I'm gonna go with your advice and see how it goes. Thanks again !!

Im running the 95gr Berger VLD hunting out of my 24" 1:10 twist howa .243 out to 1000yrs and they shoot unreal.

I shoot the 90gr Berger target bullet out of mine (1-9 twist). Consistently a .5 moa performer at 200 yards with not much load development.

What are peoples experiences with 1:8 twist? I have a Ruger RSI 77 Tang Safety that I can carry around all day and not worry about it. I haven't hand loaded for it (yet) and would like to get a running start... Thanks!

Lots of good specific recommendations already, but in the end your barrel is going to pick the bullet it likes best. You can usually go heavier with a flat base bullet (100gr and over) in the slower twist barrels, but you will loose some BC. I'd guess 85-95gr in a match bullet will be your sweet spot depending on what your barrel likes.

Thanks! My rifle likes the Federal 100gr FB Softpoints... I like the Berger Hunting bullet... But am also a fan of Barnes Bullets... I'm looking for a starting point really...

Yesterday I tried the 108 grain Hornady ELDM bullets in my two 6mm Remington rifles. The starting loads patterned and were keyholeing. The max loads were better, but over 1 MOA. When I tried the 100 grain Hornady Spitzer it tightened up some. I'll try the 95 Bergers next.
Additionally, I tested the 270 win Lead Free Nosler E Tip and it looked really good. Load development to follow.

I have an old 700 BDL. 243 as well and now have 95gr bergers loaded for hunting rounds and it shoots great!

The 108gr ELD needs a 7.5 or 8 twist to be properly stable. Your rifle probably has a 1-9 or slower
