I have a 1903a3 30-06 that my father sporterized. It has the original 2 groove barrel. It still shoots 1 moa at 100. But they did a so-so job tapping the receiver. It needs redone, as I consider it a weak link. One screw front and rear and front is slightly off center. But this is over come by the Leupold mount to get on target. Am considering a permanently mounted pic rail. I would love to hunt more with it but worry smacking the scope will easily break the 2 mounting screws. I understand no heat can be applied to the front of the action but could it be screwed up front and welded in the rear?
I am also considering rebarreling to 284 win or 280 ai. But am concerned with exceeding the 50k CUP max recommended by CMP. I have in the past used book max loads for 150 and 165 gr bullets in this action, up to 58K CUP. But recently saw the CUP max recommendation.
Any experience with this action mods I have mentioned would be appreciated.
