I've seen a few videos of the bolt handle being threaded on a mill. I know the length of the threaded 5/16" shank should be .600". I was just wondering, once the bolt is all set up and indicated, how much is taken off the top of bolt knob to get that proper .600" dimension before it's turned down to 5/16" for threading. Thanks

I know nothing about doing it in a mill, but have done a few on the lathe with a LaBounty fixture. I didn't take anything off the length of the bolt knob, initially. I turned it to diameter, threaded it, the squared it off, which resulted in a little shortening. I made my bolt knob to match up with the length of the threading, but it would be just as easy to shorten it to .600" at that point, too.

Thank you. I took some measurements and it looks like I will need to remove approx .100" off the length to get me to .600". I can also wait until it's turned down and threaded to see where I'm at and how much needs to be removed. I'm probably just overthinking it as usual. Thanks again for your reply.
