Twist rate for 338 Federal?

A 10 twist will stabilize a 300 Berger. For this kind of rifle a 10 wont hurt you, but theres been a trend to way over twist the last few years. It does cause tuning issues and bullets get more explosive the more you twist them. Not an issue in a 338 fed but no reason to run an 8 when a 12 or even slower is more than enough. I will slightly over twist stuff for elr but the most accurate thing on earth at 300 yards is a 6ppc and we slightly under twist them.

If interested there is a super long 338 federal reloading discussion on 24 hour campfire. About every load imaginable has been tried there.

Try this.
Thanks for the link, alot of great info posted there. Old thread and long, well worth the it.

48.5 gr of 8208XBR and no longer made 180 gr NBT's knocks deer off their feet, little or no meat damage.

My factory barrel is 1 in 10" twist, if going custom I'd check with the barrel manufacturer but thinking 1 in 12" better for the Federal cartridge/bullets.

Mine is a Savage 110 Storm with a 22" 10 twist and it has shot 180-200 grain fine.
I currently have some old midway 185 grain seconds that look like core lock or fusion that I'm loaded with.
Once they run out… I have some 180 Accubonds to carry me for a while.
I like the idea of 200 grain and under tor a bit more velocity in the 338 Fed.
I never considered copper bullets because I don't think you'll see much meat damage from the velocity of the cartridge either.
