Still trying to learn

Something to read that may or may not help.
If you are only going to shoot it at 2800fps, buy a new rifle in 30-06. Same performance.....and you'll get your barrel life.....plus waaaay more.
How does a .30-06 shooting at 2800fps barrel life beat a 300SAUM shooting the same bullet at the same 2800fps?

And how does buying a whole new rifle vs a rebarrel of a full custom with a shot out barrel make sense?

Plus, the OP is wanting a 28" barrel. I don't see too many factory .30-06s with that barrel length.

Pretty sure the chances of a full custom with a new high end barrel shooting better than a factory rifle are greater. I would take those chances.

Why shoot a magnum cartridge if you aren't going to take advantage of the extra horsepower? Makes no sense to do that.
And if you look at Hodgdon's load data with 180 grain bullet,
you get the same velocity with the same barrel length with about 2-3 grains less powder. That alone equals more barrel life.
If you want a magnum cartridge, you want it for performance. If you can duplicate the velocity with less powder, then why do it?
And if you want to have the performance, you have to sacrifice something.....barrel life and more powder.
And btw, I don't see too many factory rifles with 28" barrels, in any caliber, period!
Oh and 1 other thing, if you read the next post down, I don't know where you got a "full custom" from. It's a Savage 110.
:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Just got off the phone with Unknown Munitions. We are going to rebarrel and rechamber the Savage 110 ultralight 28 nosler to 338 edge. And I am going to continue to shoot and hunt with my 300 weatherby. Saves me miney in the long run. I have been waiting on my Brux Barrel since march. It will be ready in January. Honestly thank you all for leading me through my crazy head and thoughts! You guys are great

Go with the 300 saum, and throat it longer for the bullets you intend to shoot. I have a fresh batch of ADG brass with proper head stamp as well. Also currently working on a line of ammo for it.
