300 Win Mag vs 300 PRC

I have loaded belted cases in 5+ decades and have never had case separation.
Only once for me in about 30 years. Rem R-P 7RM case with 11 firings.

That being said, when I decided to sell my 15.5lb 300RUM, I wanted something lighter recoiling and lighter to carry. Was honestly planning on a 215 @ 2800 and I would be happy.
Then I did the stupid thing and built a 9.5lb .300PRC and am running it suppressed pushing a 230 @ 2995fps...but it is a tack driver. I had only shot it to 450, so I took it out last time to try 1k+. Cold bore, first shot of the day, 1397 yards, rang the 12x18 silhouette. Then put two more on it. Let it cool, and went 3 for 3 on the 1100 yard 8" round. 3 more at 1008 and put it away as my collar bone wasn't too happy. Recoil is "stout".

I have been around a fare share of 300prc's and not a single one will push even a 215 at the 2995fps you're seeing with a 230 haha. So very unimpressed with anything PRC, what barrel length are you running?

Guy-
I too enjoy the G&G content on UR but I have to say I'm a bit envious of all the toys Gavin has. Have you ever seen anyone with that many presses? Then he couldn't suffice with one awesome lathe had to get the bigger more awesome one. :p
I do understand that most of it is for demonstration purposes and I can appreciate that but common really!!

Exodus 20:17
Forgive me Lord

He builds some very accurate and appealing rifles and seeing it from start to finish including range testing is very satisfying for me. Send a thanks from me Gavin's way the next time you see him and don't mention all that envy stuff.;)

Oh and I liked the way you made the win mag come out on top being an old school guy (no pun intended) myself the look on Gavin's face was priceless.

All the best,
Tom

26" 1:9" 5R Bartlein Sendero CF w. TBAC Ultra 9
Lapua brass
Federal GM215M
N570
230 Hyb

I had the 215s up to 3034 w. N570 and 2980 w. H1000.

At over 80 grains of powder per cartridge, I went through rather a lot of Magpro coming up with this info. Fun though, I hadn't done much 300 magnum shooting in quite a while.

Details of each rifle? Barrel length, SAAMI chamber or custom, action, twist? It would be interesting to know.

I have had 2 300WM's and 1 300PRC. Current rifle is a 300PRC 28 inch proof full boar 1-9 twist barrel. I shoot the 230 A-Tip at 3010FPS with RL 26 with a SD of 11fps. The SD dropped just a little bit with once fired brass. I probably would not do another 300WM at this point but that's just me.

Had a lot of fun comparing these two great cartridges, one old, one new. They both do about the same thing, but with rather different cases and some other differences as well.

Got scorching velocity with the 180 grain Berger and the 300 Win Mag with Magpro powder. This was in 30 degree weather from a 26" Bergara barrel.

I'm a far thing from being an expert but, to me those numbers appear almost identical. The differences are marginal. With that said, I think I would lean towards the PRC and get rid of the belt.

Just looking for opinions on what is the maximum number of times should someone reload .300 WM cases? Before case separation rears its ugly head.
that's subjective as quality and lot #'s can change how many you could get. i've been shooting my dad's pre64 264wm since i was 11 ('76) until '14. shot over 2,500 rounds of very hot 140gr sbt sierra's w/ 61.3gr of imr4831. at least 2k was of that combo and the other 500 or so was 85's and 100's of sierra hp's. 100 pieces of win super-x brass reloaded 24 times. i still have the brass, but started using in the post64 ('14 or '15 model). treatment of brass could have an impact on how many times it could be reloaded! the 300wm might be punished more than the 264wm because of the heavier bullets, but unsure and not verified on that?

It is a myth.
The ONLY cause of case head separation is from HANDLOADERS SIZING TOO MUCH….
I have numerous batches of 300WM, 264WM, 270 Bee, 300 Bee, 340 Bee & 375 Bee brass that have exceeded 20 sizings
I can show you a case on it's tenth firing sectioned and prove that no stretching takes place if you don't induce excessive headspace with your die.

I have been going back and forth between these 2 for my next rifle build over the last year while I am collecting parts. The new case design of the 300 prc is appealing but not sure there is a real performance difference. I like the heavy bullet offering in factory ammo for the prc. I have had great results with factory ammo ,federal 200gr terminal ascents for the 300 win mag. Hand loads I would favor h1000 for temp stability and longer lasting throat. I have ran across more than a few times hand loads for the prc is pressuring out before desired speed with h1000 and going to N570 or similar to get it. Anyone loading for both with the same powder and Berger 215's and 220's?
