257 wby. Recoil on mine is about the same as my 6.5 creed.
The simple solution is to have a muzzle brake installed. I prefer the target/sniper style. I have done this on a couple of 300 WM as well as a 338 WM. Dropped the recoil on the 300s to that between a 243 and 308, the 338 down to the equivalent of a 270. I have heard, but not tried a suppressor will do the same. I personally have not tried one, my rifle barrels are 24 and 26 inches long with the brake, (I like to get all the velocity I can by using a longer barrel since I load for accuracy and not max velocity) Burn the powder in the barrel not out in front of you where it does absolutely nothing. Powder burning in the air in front of you (see how much muzzle flash you have by having a buddy shoot the rifle and watch from the side just before sunset. All that big flash out in front of the barrel is powder burning outside of the barrel which is costing you money for burnt powder that does not do anything for you.)I have a tikka t3 300 win mag that I'd like to rebarrel. I want this to be a dual purpose rifle, hunting and long range fun when it's not hunting season. It's a 7lb rifle so it's not very fun to shoot as it is. The largest animals it will shoot are whitetail and hogs. I'm looking for the best ballistics as possible, with the lowest recoil as possible. What calibers would you recommend that will be compatible with the action?
If you just have to, then I would go with a 257Wby with an 8" or 9" twist, so I could run the heavies as needed. Next in line for me is the 264WM with an 8" twist. Both will reach out with authority on deer and hogs, have much less recoil than a standard 300WM load and give you good ballistics down range on the 1,000 yard line. But that's just me.I have a tikka t3 300 win mag that I'd like to rebarrel. I want this to be a dual purpose rifle, hunting and long range fun when it's not hunting season. The cheapest is $50/20 with SP and twice that for the rest.Lots of suggestions for 257 Weatherby which is a fine round, but if you don't reload you might want to look at the price of a box of ammo......that could be a very expensive target round.
