View attachment 616114Not the biggest elk in the wilderness, but he is the biggest I have had an opportunity to harvest. I knew this hunt would be a challenge for me physically and I am pleased with the training and prep I did leading into it. I am 57 and survived a heart attack with triple bypass 4 years ago. I was packed in with horses and my gear, dropped and picked up 5 days later. During that entire time I never saw another human on the ground as far as I could glass until the outfitter rode back up to my camp with the horses and a mule. I did see some military aircraft training each day. Other than that pure solitude! I shared the story on FB. This one was very meaningful and spiritually good for the soul. If you're getting older and gray like me and maybe a little nervous about getting out there alone in the wilderness as I was, all I have to say is just make it happen!! Prepare, research and invest in the right gear. It was more than worth it!! As for the shot… 740 yards, 175 Berger EH. 7 Sherman Short. 2915 fps (moderate load) bull was walking 3mph left to right into the wind coming up the drainage and wasn't gonna stop. Lead was 1.8 mil. First shot was lethal and stopped him in his tracks, second shot folded him. Bullet, rifle, optic, dope all worked flawlessly. I own an in motion targets mover system and practice with it a lot which also paid off in this situation. Not to mention shooting field matches and NRL Hunter. Check out the video if you're interested in more details. Good hunting everyone!
