Labeling a gun barrel

That's interesting. I'm not worried about atf showing up and checking the depth with a feeler gage though.

If they're checking depths you already have issues with the atf.

I dealt/saw lots of custom builders and the American builders that actually know how to solder and regulate sights/barrels usually are pretty loose with their required markings but they also fall well under the 50 rifles a year

That's what is nice about the laser. We took cut off's of SS and chromemoly barrels and burned a large "swath" into so we could actually measure the depth with a mic. We know how many passes and what power settings we need to get the required .003 depth and usually go about .004 to .005 . If I burn one and it doesn't look deep enough, it's easy enough to make a few more passes. Of course that only becomes a concern when doing form 1 stuff. We always stay within the guidelines and keep it legal.
 
We do all of our caliber markings on chrome-moly or SS .003 unless the customer specifies diff. If we do it on a Cerekoted gun it is only going to be through the Cerekote, down to the base metal. I can go a little deeper on Cerekote but we don't want to chance melting the coating at the edges and there is really no need to go deeper. IT will blow off the Cerekote very cleanly and the markings look great. If we do an address label on the rifle barrel or receiver it is going to be at least that deep per atf requirements. That is not negotiable and needs to be done before coating it.
