300 rum vs 300 prc which is better

MM, what are the case design elements you see as better? I took a look at case specs as I see both have about 0.305" neck, 30* neck, less body taper on PRC (0.017" vs 0.025"), both 0.534" case heads, the RUM is slightly rebated as body starts at 0.550". I am sincerely asking to learn and understand what you see as better. Appreciate the perspective 👍
The PRC case is based on the 375 Ruger, which is a design copied from the early works of Newton, he developed the .532":case without the belt in the early 20th century.
Hornady will tell you it's THEIR unique design….
I say the RUM is a better design because it is .550" wide and is more efficient than the PRC for grains in, velocity out.
If belts were causing inaccuracy, as Hornady says, then how did a cartridge with a .264" long neck, a belt and skinny powder column win several long range tournaments and come within 50fps of their beloved PRC? Know which one I'm referring too?

Cheers.

I think I've decided to try to find a rum thanks everyone for the advice
Howdy, if you can go find as many as you can in gun shops to handle them.
Yes typically you won't find to many 300RUMS without someone ordering one for you. Then try and handle the model that you like in a different caliber.
Hope this helps.

If going new, ignore.

Try to get the round count. It is a lot of powder.

I have 2 300 RUM, 308-26 Nosler and about every other "normal" 300. So, experienced in that.
Interesting on the 30-26 Nosler. Assuming that it gives you a slightly longer neck then???

I see you said that you have chosen the 300 RUM.. I build a ton of them and will tell you they will surpass a 300 prc in any barrel length with any bullet.

The PRC is a very popular round and i can see why, they capitalized on the factory market for sure with this one and they shoot extremely well with it!

I always grin a little when guys say "It's not worth the powder being burned" But yet still want Ultra velocity without actually burning powder necessary to get it😝

My 2 cents.....Factory 300 RUMS wont let you take advantage of the larger case honestly. Will they shoot good? For sure, but if i were looking for a 300 RUM i would look in the classified ads here and find one built on a good custom action, longer mag box and throated correctly.. you will be way happier than with a factory offering. Most rifles for sale here are well taken care of and built right

@derickd

@Elk Hunter 338 knows his stuff and I agree with him.

For the .308-26 Nosler, the neck length to bullet diameter is %94.5. See: https://ammoguide.com/cgi-bin/ai.cgi?sn=BlNBaLgXQE&catid=930
For the 28 Nosler, the neck length to bullet diameter is %.96.5. See: https://ammoguide.com/cgi-bin/ai.cgi?sn=VbhVGLgXTc&catid=915

So neck length is just under bullet diameter. This is my preference. Also that 1-1 or a little less for neck length to bullet seems to be the "standard" for "Precision" designs.

The actual 30 Nosler pushes the shoulder down 0.034" for a still longer neck of 1-1 and to accommodate the longer .308 bullets Nosler planned on making factory rounds with. In emails from about 2018, with the Nosler dude, they needed to make the 3.340" OAL to fit "Normal" long actions like those based on the R700. I use Weatherby Mark V 9 lug so my OAL for mag load was much longer.

For reference: the 30 Nosler is %100, aka 1-1, 300 RUM is %99.5, the 300 WSM is %96.7, the 300 PRC is %100.

@fseaman - thank you sir for that explanation!!!!

I truly appreciated the links because I had forgotten that the 26 Nosler was the first out and understanding the ratios!!!

I have two 300 RUM's and my hunting partner shoots the PRC. Very similar for sure. Only complaint on the RUM is OAL and fitting in the mag, even with the extended Fierce.
My favorite load is different than most. 165 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip on top of 97 grains of RL-25. 3450fps. Of course this is deer and antelope size game. Shoots in one hole.
My Fierce is only 3.70 that I can load to and eject a loaded round. Barely better than the old Mod 700 that I owned in the original chambering in 1998. I'm sure there are MANY semi custom Rums set up for 3.85+ OAL
