Convince me…

Lapua 300PRC brass
CCI250
N570
230 Hyb
2995fps from 26" 1:9"
Got 3026 & 3042 on the next couple charge weights but started to open up.

I have a buddy who has a 28" 300SM pushing 245s @ 2800. But he can't load for crap...
Yeah i dont believe i would be able to get much more then 2600 safely using a 245. A change of components and barrel would have to be my option. So if i can find something that will already fit in my gun without having to buy a new action, that would be my goal. So here i am at the 300 rum (or a variant) or a 300 prc (or a variant)

Who on earth uses a 34" barrel on a hunting rifle?
This is a LONG RANGE HUNTING FORUM.
Those of us that hunt TRUE LR use the tools required to do such things with the best that we can. This means LONG barrels, steady rests and bags, scopes and other gadgets to do so.
I see so much banter here about 16.5", 18", 20" & 22" barrels it amazes me.
Who uses these barrel lengths for true LR hunting?

Unbelievable!

Here's one of my LR builds.
REM 700, trued and blueprinted, pinned .250" recoil lug, switch barrel in 264WM with custom chamber and throat to my specs. 29.5", 8" twist barrel on the rifle, below, 7STW barrel, 26" factory barrel I reamed from a 7RM.
Trigger Tech, PT&G stainless bottom metal, PT&G fluted one piece bolt (not shown) that bolt shown got a PT&G cocking piece to fix timing and cock on opening issues, in the end didn't use it.
The action is as slick and smooth as any custom action. Raceways and lugs were stoned and polished.

Cheers.

I would consider to just go buy a 300 Weatherby and be done with it. No fuss no muss. The barrel life is longer with a 300 RUM and you can buy ammo anywhere, you will not find RUM ammo in some places and the selection on it will be low, meaning you will probably have to reload.
Happy shooting.

Luckily im very heavy into reloading. No problem there. Brass is also readily available through ADG, Peterson, and Norma. Also no problem there.

Well I got tired of packing a 30 inch barreled rifle for years.
Started me searching for a replacement
Now I can hunt with a 24 inched barrel 338 nmi and have VERY good exterior and terminal ballistics with a 275 grain CTE Mth being pushed by N570 @ 2950
It's a much better option for me
Maybe not for others

I shot a mtn goat at 1060 a couple weeks ago
A b&c desert bighorn this year at 650
Shot another 180 desert sheep at 900 two years ago
Handful of antelope in the 600-750 range
Probably the same for mule deer
Shot a 51" bezoar ibex at 575 and a 40 degree incline. That was a fun shot

So none of these are where your waiting for whitetails to show in a blind with a bench set up. Where they are coming out to a feeder and you have all day to get everything ready. That's not even a challenge

I would just go with a 30-378 Weatherby.

Tony
I have both a 378 Weatherby, and recently I got myself a new 338-378 Weatherby. I thought about getting a 30-378 but due to this LRH forum, I bought the 338 instead. Thanks to all y'all 338 shooters! Having said all that, I can only say that you would LOVE a 30-378 Weatherby. Fast and flawless. And strong, too!

2 things, we are not allowed feeders, baits or driving our deer, blinds are allowed but cannot be used with as a permanent fixture.

We, my spotter and myself, shoot to around 800-900 metres, but take far more game at 600-700 metres. Our bush here is difficult to hunt, spot and stalk is almost always an uphill or downhill shot with tree ferns and grass trees in the way.
We both run LR dedicated guns and equipment from elevated mountain positions looking over fringe country for 3 species of deer. We don't have seasons here except for one deer species that has 1 month season annually in April.
So, my situation and hunting is vastly different here. It would be nice to have Alaskan and Canadian terrain here, but we don't.

Cheers.

I can get 2800 with a 32" barrel out of a 300wsm and 245's (probably not practical)...The "problem" with 245's is they take A LOT of FB, you will be jumping everything else a BUNCH. It's a great bullet super high BC and shoots very well.
