Arkansas just changed their blackpowder laws to read straight walled centerfire larger than .30cal and no semi-automatic allowed. I happen to hold both an AR and OK lifetime license and live on the state line. I was looking at purchasing a 400 legend but not seeing much for ammo availability? Has anybody heard of new ammo choices other than the Winchester 215 soft points??

As far as factory ammo that seems to be the main seller. Win has a 190 gr. coming soon. Load your own you have more choices.

I saw the best deals there off Ammo seek, and I saw where Midway has "Coming Soon" on those 190gr polymer tips but wondering when for one? Then if any other ammo manufacturers will come out with offerings like barnes, or Hornady?

400 Legend would be a good cartridge if they would have made it 1.8" it would have been much better and and still worked in a AR platform plus give bolt action users a little more room for powder....
 
There's a comparison chart for 400 legend to that 450 bushmaster and I'm hearing recoils way better out the legend. As for the twist, yes 1.8" would have been nice but I bet you could get an aftermarket barrel with a better twist if you wanna spend the jack to get one.
 
Look into a Savage Trail Hunter. I recently picked one up in 350L and 400L for deer hunting in IL. I chose this model because of it's already Cerakoted and it has a heavier barrel to help with recoil (the 350 is for my 10 yr old). I'm not a big fan of the rubber coated stock, so I ordered a MDT XRS chassis for my 400 along with a mag block from MK Machine since IL has single shot restrictions. Once the stock gets here, I'll sight it in and post the results. I might make a short video because I think the rifle will be an ideal choice for what I need it to do. I have 10 boxes of the 215 ammo, and I'll be trying the 190's if I'm not completely happy with how it shoots.

Everyone seems to be getting those Savages around here too, but I'm thinking what if my home state goes to a single shot restriction? Arkansas only says no semi autos, but Oklahoma may go single shot route. Even still those CVAs come with a fluted 22" ported barrel. I just can't seem to find one, and ammo choices are slim as you said.

I've went a little crazy and bought the straight wall tri-fecta...350, 400 legends and 450BM. I'm finding those soft points from Winchester are shooting very well... sub MOA in most cases. rarely over 2 inches when I feel good about the shots. Those are pretty big stable bullets from my view. I will say this, I definitely think the 400 is going to be where I settle in. The 450 is good but is a bit of a horse, the 350 seems a little light in thump and I'm finding the 400 shoots as good as the 350 with a larger bullet. All that said, the Winchester ammo has proven very consistent for me and I'm a bit of a reloading snob with my other longer range stuff.

Yeah my only desire is to get that 400 legend in a cva 22' barrel but when I called CVA they said they don't make it, which don't make sense because I've found it on 2 separate websites but saying sold out??

In many cases on the internet advertising for a company, web designers often use particular potential chambers as place holders in their designs so as to have a space if those chambers actually show up on the market. It just saves them trying to shoe horn a new offering into the original design. The 'out-of-stock' note is just a deterrent for buyers.

Get one made by a competent gunsmith and go enjoy the hunt!

I was finally able to shoot my 400 L a few times today. It's a Savage Trail Hunter with an XRS chassis. I wasn't thrilled with the factory stock. I shot the factory 215 gr ammo for break in and then shot both the 215 gr and 190 gr for groups at 100 yds. This was done off of a bench at my local range. I was going to only shoot 3 shot groups, but I ended up pulling one shot with each bullet, so I shot another to make up for my mistake. To my surprise, the gun shot both bullets identically except for a slight difference in placement of the groups. I'll strech it out to 200 yds next week to see if one shows better.
