Howdy! I've been reading and lurking on this site for many years and decided that I am ready to get into long"er" range shooting! I know very little but will be reading as much as I can. I'm looking to get into it with a more budget type rifle so that I can get better at my shooting technique. Wish me luck and I hope I don't spend too much money! Ha! - Geoff

Welcome from the western side of the state. We need to beat down any and all of these issues the Denver crowd is pushing down our throats, they already killed us with the wolf initiative, next up is the banning of trapping and hunting mountain lion.
It's ridiculous!!! And "trophy hunting" will be next. Wolves and lions take care of elk and deer populations and they will start cutting tags. I can't stand it. Remember, it's also bobbers too. I need to go out and whack a few bobcats this winter! It's been a while.

Welcome from western Pa. Any specific budget rifle and or cartridges that you are looking at?
Thanks! I'm looking at a 6.5 CM or 6.5 PRC. Something around 9 or 10 lbs without scope. Nothing too crazy but want to try a chassis of some sort with adjustable comb. Howa 1500 build, Bergara, Tikka etc. Doesn't really matter to me too much. I would like a capable gun that is comfortable and fun to shoot and something that I can practice a lot on and work on fundamentals.

Welcome , Im in Canon City but drive through CR to the Tech Center for my 7 on shifts on. Youll get plenty of great people chime in that are very good at what they do. Do you reload?
Thanks! I don't reload but want to learn. My buddy is way more into guns and reloading than I am so he can teach me how to reload so that will be awesome. Did you hear about the guy that killed a lion with a shovel? Do you know him or is it you?

CPW investigating killing of mountain lion by Canon City-area man claiming self-defense
CANON CITY, Colo. – On Sept. 26, a Colorado Parks and Wildlife officer in Cañon City responded to a report of an aggressive mountain lion that had been killed by a man with a shovel.
The CPW officer found the man with a dead lion on the hood of his Jeep in a campground west of Cañon City, in Fremont County.
The man told CPW that he was sitting outside his recreational vehicle with his dog the previous night when a mountain lion approached them. The CPW officer described the lion as a female that weighed about 95 pounds.
The man said his dog, a husky, began growling and barking as the lion approached. When the lion got within about 10 feet, the dog engaged it and the man grabbed a shovel, which he used to strike the lion in the head, killing it.
The CPW officer's preliminary finding was that the man was in fear of his life and acted in self defense when confronted by a lion acting unusual and extremely aggressive.
Further inspection of the lion revealed it had an injury to its front right paw and scratches along its back. The lion's body was shipped to a CPW animal health lab for a necropsy.
As this remains an open investigation, CPW will have no further comment on the incident.
Because the man suffered no injuries and was never touched by the lion, this incident does not qualify as a mountain lion attack under CPW guidelines.
