I just acquired a Sako 257 magnum rifle with 1-12 twist I have been reloading for years but not having much success with finding correct bullet weight. Tried 120gr and thought I would go to the other end of spectrum and try a 60gr. However, it appears to short for proper overall case and bullet length. Hornady 60gr FP. Open minded so have at it. Please. Thank you.
 
80g Barnes TTSX for the 12 twist, Barnes said it should work.

These are borderline failures:
100Gr Nosler B-Tip
100Gr Nosler Partition-best choice of all of these 100g bullets due to length
100Grain Barnes TSX
100Grain Swift Scirocco

In my friend's 257 Weatherby 12 twist, he shot the 100g Sierra bthp for chucks at 4000 fps in a 30" barrel.

I recommended these bullets because I have used all of them with success from a couple of different Sauer built 12 twist Mark Vs. They gave good accuracy and terminal performance from 1200' of elevation on up.
 
Thank you all for guiding my direction. Although, I am not hearing the answer for a 60gr FP bullet in my rifle. Best overall case and bullet is 2.85. Tho could extend a bit. Any thoughts. Again thank you.

Not all 12 twists are the same, I had a Shilen 12T in 25/06 that would not stabilize a 100g Nosler ballistic tip, 100g Sierra btsp, nor a Hornady 100g btsp. This particular Shilen 12T would stabilize the 100g Sierra flat base and the Sierra 117g Flat base would shoot in the 4's at 3300 fps.

My friend's 30" Hart 12 Twist in 257 Weatherby with zero freebore would stabilize the Sierra 100g Match btsp at 4000 fps, shooting at an elevation of 6000 feet.

Is the Sauer built, 257 Weatherby a metric measurement on their 12 Twist, where they rounded to 12?

Hard to say. I think they were built in the 60s. I never actually considered stability would be an issue in 100 grain bullets or less back when I was shooting these. If I still had either of those rifles I would check the actual twist.
