Who says no predators?

Believe me, it's not a comforting sight when you're bow hunting in the evening and a pack of 11 coyotes comes in to 15 yards from your stand!!
Luckily, 10 left!

Or your bow hunting and a 400lb black bear comes literally walking under your stand.

Both situations have you comptemplating your choice of sidearm!
Especially when the truck is 2 miles away.

As for predators on the elk.
They behave more like cattle than deer.
When there's predators around they herd up, but aren't as interested in mating.
So when the Game Commission sees bigger herds, but less pregnant cows, they scratch their heads, and add more elk to the limit for next year.
