My "can't get in wheelgun range" tool this year will be a TC in various chamberings based on the critter.
I just swapped it over to 6.5 Grendel. Running the 105 Cutting Edge at just under 2500 fps it should do just fine for the max range I'll go (400). The Maximus bullet expands down to a very low velocity.
I ran 8" steel to 500 yards with it the other day. The Trijicon 1-8 with MOA reticle in ffp works well. Keeping a smaller profile makes it a lot more packable and keeps it from being top heavy in field shooting positions.
I switched to all low power variable optics on the single shot bolt and break action guns a few years ago. Huge improvement under hunting conditions vs the larger optics.
