Will be hunting canola fields in Alberta Canada. What's a good attractant for mule bucks to come to in sept and oct? Thanks.

If they behave anything like a white tail, a sleeping hunter.
On the serious side.
Possibly like any other deer/elk.
Around Pennsylvania, the brassica do well.
They absolutely tear up any turnips or radishes that are planted.

in the states, is illegal to hunt over bait in states that have mule deer typically, maybe Oregon allows it, but no one really goes to Oregon for premium mule deer hunting.
So really the only thing to go off of is people that manage game on private property.
They like salt licks and sweet stuff for whatever reason. People swear by trophy rock.
That said, whatever works for whitetail probably won't work for mule deer as well or in the same way.
They are two different deer with different habits, environments and requirements.

Honestly, if you are wondering about scent attractents, no scent is the best scent IMO.
A deer can smell 1400 odors at once... and identify them individually according to scientists. If you have scent nearby and a deer puts that nose in the air he is likely going to smell you also.
I would think the canola field would be attractent enough.

I have read that when whitetails are eating green they need salt to help with digestion and my trail cam verifies this. Not sure if true for mule deer but it may work. It would take at least a week or so before they find it though and not sure if you have time restraints to hunt the property.
I'm with manitou and the field should be enough attraction. I would glass the field a couple days and see their entrance point or exit and set up a ambush.

Do check the regulations where you are hunting.
Some places (Pennsylvania) don't allow attractants (read bait/salt).
Using attractants here just brings in the game wardens.

I've got a story…. A guy that I worked with years ago (we'll just call him Dick) hunted a small parcel of public that nobody knew about until someone found it. Dick tried to bully the guy out but it didn't work so he said he had another plan. A week later he came in moaning about not being able to hunt his spot. He called the game warden and took him to the other guys stand and there was a salt block there. He told the GW to ticket the guy and boot him from the property. The GW said that he would do an investigation but nobody was allowed to hunt the property since it was baited!
I laughed so hard afterwards because I knew darn well who put the block there and it wasn't the other guy.
Sorry for the slight derailment of the thread.

My personal opinion is nothing will work as good on mule deer as it does on whitetails. Mule deer habits are completely different and I have personally tried several different methods during the summer to get trail cam pics of the big bucks on our property with no real success. The does, fawns and young bucks would eat anything I put down but the bigs bucks never once bothered with any of it. Just my experience though.

Screw the lid from a jar of Skippy to a tree or fence post, screw the jar of PB to the lid, cut the bottom off the jar of PB. For $5, it's worth a try....most critters seem to like PB....

Hey I've been told and I don't know if it's true or not but I've been told that deer have no gallbladder and if they eat grease it'll kill them and some peanut butter has hydrogenated vegetable oil in it and I don't know if that's the grease or not but I would try smukers which is just ground up peanut and salt just be on the safe side this is just an opinion. Tribb

Dbl check, it's been a few yrs since I was in Alberta, but baiting was illegal then. I believe scents were OK. Again, dbl check. I'd trust the Alberta F&G dept website before believing what I read on here.
