Velvet after the shot?

So how does one go about caring for a deer or elk shot with full velvet? If one can't get to the taxidermist for a few days what does one do?
Freeze it or hang the skull upside down with a syringe and a needle inject 91% alcohol into the horn near the base and other places you don't notice any small holes that will help preserve it.
Also use the needle to poke a hole at the tip of every tine to let any blood and liquid drip out

I've never done it personally, but I've read somewhere that you can Inject formaldehyde on the inside junction of each antler tine, where there is a small pore. The biggest thing is to be very carefull with the antlers as they are very easy to get tears in the velvet
