I've hunted every year of my life since I was 8 years old I'll turn 75 shortly. I'm from Oregon and the forest service has closed the area where my tags are good for until the 31st of December. At least as I understand it that's the way it is as of now. I have archery tags which are good for the month of September. Was wondering if any one has any ideas of an elk hunt that a guy could get a tag for. We are not rich, my wife likes to go (not out hunting but to camp). I would be interested in rifle or archery. Cow, Bull or either sex tag would be fine. I'm not just a road hunter but probably days of putting in 5 plus miles in a day are past me. We have a camp trailer that we usually stay in. I know that out of state hunters aren't very popular with a lot of you but if anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate hearing about them. Feel free to PM me and if you would rather talk than type I'll send you my phone number or send yours and I'll call you. Thank you. DJ

Well...I used to haunt a few places allover in oregon back in the day....from the coast thru the high desert.....
Where exactly are they 'closing the woods'?
Legally...they can't close the public lands without one helluva reason...and 'fire danger' was never a legal reason to close the public lands.....though they coukd bust you for smoking a cigarette in the truck during fire danger....
Now when I haunted the Hood area they did close several acres of the woods....but that was because they were busy digging up human remains.....a 'contractor was picking up workers from Burnside Rd' and taking them to the mountain and killing them......plus 'murder camp'...a guy offed his girlfriend in a spot very close to the other one......
Interesting areas to hunt......or be hunted...

Land access is closed due to fire activity all the time. It's very common unfortunately. This years fire activity is devastating to Oregon. Idaho isn't that bad this year but it's also partially due to most of the state has already been fried.

Public lands aren't ever to be closed...unless a current fire is being worked on..that just means road closures..
I played that game in oregon many years...
FS nor BLM can not be 'closed'...you may have to travel out of your 'normal hunting area'..
state lands are a little different......the governor controls that area....
Private timber lands are completely by the company...although as of late..there is a certain 'group' that has purchased private timber lands and using the 'harvestable' timber lands as a stock commodity.....and that group has threatened big timber companies with being sued 'if a fire started on timber companies lands' crosses the property lines and burns their future commodity....
..and the threat has worked to close once open to walk-in areas and permit areas to for fear of being sued.......the threat got so horrendous that Warehouser even sold off assets........

You'll have to double check OTC tags in CO. They changed a bunch this year. The unit we've hunted for almost 40 years, no longer has OTC bull tags. Because of the bad winter kill in Western CO a couple of years back, they used that for one of the excuses for the changes. The reality is, they used it to raise the prices...again! Then there's the reason they won't talk about- the introduction of the wolves.

To my understanding they have closed the entire Emigrant National Forest, the office for this section is in Hines Oregon. Burns and Hines are two different towns but are so close that a good share of people just think it is all Burns. Again thank you for the responses appreciate it.

I travel back and forth from Idaho to oregon and usually try to fill my gas tanks in small towns.....often I try to get to Riley...nice little country store..food..gas...and hunting equipment...used to be just archery related..now lots more.....
I cruise across the desert..from Ontario to sw oregon..most often down
thru Christmas valley to hwy 97....sometimes I go towards Bend..but I dislike driving thru that choked city.......but there are backroads.....I find them useful....especially if I fill up in Cresent before heading east....

Regardless, it is done every year here. Closing the area down due to fire is nothing new and likely will always be a thing. Never checked the legality part but can't imagine that even being remotely contestable.
