IMR 4831 Go to powder for what?

I grew up with two military surplus powders for handloading. IMR4895 and IMR4831. Used 4895 for the 30-06 and 4831 for most other common rounds: 270 Win, 25-06. My dad bought 50lb kegs @50 cents per pound. Never could match accuracy of factory loads in the 7mm Mag, but killed lots of elk with 2" hundred yard groups using 4831. My current sub-MOA group for 300 Win Mag uses H-4831SC. Modern bullets & powders provide better accuracy than we could achieve back in the 50's and 60's. But the old mainstays kept lots of families fed.

Right after I got out of the U.S. Army I worked in a light bulb factory, 1965 to 1971. Powder then was shipped mostly by train. A guy that worked there lived near the railroad. We would pay him .75 cents ( Seventy Five Cents a pound) powder was 50 cents a pound and .25 for freight. It came in 1 lb. bags with wire closure like a coffee bag. When the powder came in we would meet after shift and divvy it up out of the trunk of his car. Not long ago I opened and 30 cal. MG box and found one of those 1 lb. bags of surplus 4831.

Shot a lot of surplus 4831 in 243. Win. 270 Win. 264 WM and 7mm Rem. Mag. Killed a lot of groundhogs with a load of surplus 4831 and 80 Speer bullets. Those were days to remember.

IMR 4895 is what I use for my 223 bolt action, good stuff

I've used IMR 4831 for 8mm Remington Magnum when stationed at Fort Wainwright, Alaska back in early 80's, not for me, but for a friend of mine. He ended up taking a nice Grizzly with it.

Yep it's pretty versatile.
Currently using it for.

My Son's 7mm rm
And my other Son loads it in his mod. 70 270wsm.
