Cartridge suggestions

I have 6.5x47 (2) and 7-08 in short action Rem 700's, these are exactly what I would recommend.
I'm not a fan of the 6mm, but if you are, then 6x47 is what I would recommend.

Really, the OP has 2 limiting factors.
1) short action
2) 0.473 bolt face

For the OP's desired distances I'd probably recommend something based off the 284 Win case.

Still going to be tight with the short action, but enough capacity to get bullets to where you want with enough energy.

Be it 25-284, 6.5-284, or straight 284.

I use a 260 Rem for that exact scenario...

6mm,6.5 Creedmoor,260 Remington,&7-0. Brass availability would be the creeds the other can be made from 308 brass if need be. I do see a good bunch of 260 brass

I'm a fan of the 6x47 Lapua, it's great for shooting steel out to 1k yards, easy to make 6x47 cases from 6.5 x 47 cases, inherently precise, low recoil, good bullet selection. Also works well on big game up to deer sized. It's a great coyote round too. I took this AZ whitetail at 671 yards with my 6x47 Lapua in 2022, and a great pronghorn at 420 yards in Idaho in 2019.

Lately I've got a hard on for a 6 Dasher, something I can hunt white tail with and dabble in PRS if I want.

6.5-284 is a pretty sweet cartridge. I've added a 6.5 PRC for my 'smaller than elk cartridge' which is basically its ballistic twin.

I'd still go 6 CM. For deer to 600 and steel to 1000 the 6 and 6.5 CM are great.

The 6mm CM will do all of it. Fits good in short actions. Large & small primer brass available without forming. Velocities near 3,000 with 105-107 grain bullets. Zippy velocities at over 3,200 with 87 & 90 grain bullets.

Should I be restricted to only 1 cartridge it would be the 6mm CM.

Myself, I kinda had an eyeball on the 277 Fury when I rebarrel my 700SA.

Short action for what you're talking about (600 yard whitetail/1000 yard steel) - I use a 260 for exactly that; tried & true. Second choice 6.5/284 but that's better in a long action.

Well, I have a 260AI and 6.5x47 on the same VSSF II action and, hands down, the 6.5x47 is far easier to load for and is more precise without trying very hard. My 260, when I had the standard round chambered, was temperamental to say the least, the AI version is less so, but not in the same league for tuning as the Lapua round.
