Who are you guys renting reamers from? I had an "iffy" experience with 4D recently and probably won't be using them again.

I rented and used a reamer from them a couple months ago, sent it back and got an email this week that the reamer was damaged during my use. It is possible, but two months later seems skeptical to me. I asked them why the delay but no response...

My GS rented a reamer when he worked on my .30 Gibbs without any issues.

I suggest that you give them a small break since you should consider the huge number of amateurs and real gunsmiths wishing to rent as opposed to buying and waiting for a new reamer, especially those with custom throats and free bore. They are probably sitting on a couple of hundred (or more) which have been returned that they have to examine to determine if they are damaged.

When I was renting reamers routinely, I photographed each one when it came in and then again when I returned it. No questions then.

But, stay with it if you truly feel you didn't damage the one you rented. Be a pest until you get someone to work with you.

:)

If you want to make a custom chamber for you rifle you need to look at:
1st - What Cartridge - Different from SAAMI - Buy a new Reamer- have your firearm chambered- keep the Reamer if Custom - Sell the Reamer if not going to chamber a firearm again!
I would not rent.
If I get a Reamer that is previous used or new I always put the Reamer under a

2K LCD Digital Microscope 1200X, Dcorn 7" 24MP HDMI Microscope,

or you can just take a picture of the Reamer cutting edges with your Smart Phone and ZOOM in.

sorry, but i buy from PTG. you never know when a buddy will try it, and they have COMPLETELY custom reamers.

mention bill fisher lol. they can do it for you. 230-270 dollar. and you have it in hand.

they did a 1.5" extended pilot , 270 weatherby match reamer for me, as well as others. just buy it.

it had to clean up .600" freebore i cut into my 270 win. they made it, and it works.

Unless you are going to build several rifles with a specific chamber, get the Reamer you want. I really can't advise since everyone has their own opinion. If you have a few friends that want to get the same chamber, by all means chip in together and Buy a Custom Reamer. Remember that the Custom Reamer will cost a lot more and take a lot longer to get. Keep in mind that you and your friends will also need to get Custom Dies which is more $$$$$.
Now there are options to buy a "Match Reamer" about the same cost as a SAAMI.
Depends on if you are using for LR Hunting and want Match Results. But you also need everything else down the line for a Match Rifle & Cartridge.
Personally, I would go with JGS on the Reamer. Once you design/make a Reamer it will be hard to sell later opposed to buying a already Match Reamer for a certain cartridge.

I have rented maybe a half dozen or so reamers from 4D with no issues. I rented a 338 throater from Elk Ridge once, and it arrived with a 30 Cal pilot on it. They were prompt in getting a correct pilot sent out ASAP.
