I have a 300 Sherman that I'm trying to get a load going for now that we have some primers and bullets available again.

Regardless, which is more important to you for accuracy?

Bullet match to the gun or bullet match to the powder?

Your rifle may like one bullet and not another so I would say yes the bullet must match the gun

Your gun will definitely tell you which bullets it prefers. Does make sense how some are lasers it's crazy how some bullets are lasers out of your gun and others or marginal at best but that marginal bullet is fantastic In another gun. Whether it's chambering headspace or just luck of the draw that's just how it works sometimes.

Currently testing 10+ bullets in 6AI for varmint and deer hunting. Typically the same 2 powders except last 2 heavys slightly slower powder. The 8 twist does prefer the 85+ gr bullets so far and made varmint grenades fly apart. Testing 87 Berger hunter today. I play with them in GRT and QL first and there is always a load from there that stands out. Wednesday I should be testing the 108 elite hunter.
Leaving hammer bullets and going back to Barnes TSX so will be testing those also in the near future.

I'll throw out the caveat. Some cartridges just shoot everything well. Like the .308 for instance. I find the bigger magnums need the "right" combo. Better barrels will also make life much easier.

To answer the OP's question…yes!
