If you are traveling to Africa on Safari and you have a plane change through Amsterdam you must obtain a transit permit from the Dutch at least 45 days prior to your entry/exit and return. In my case the plane layover is one hour (good luck with that for getting gun and baggage in Dar Es Salam the same day). However I know of at least one other hunting party that has only just learned of the permit requirement and will just make it.

The form is called the "Application Consent for weapons and ammunition" and runs through the Ministry of Finance. You will also need the temporary import/export permit from the Tanzanian Government to get their permit number to go on the Dutch form. You will be very frustrated trying to do this yourself so I suggest that you use an American side travel agent to do this for you.

Most travel agents will do this for you only if you are buying you flight tickets through them. However, I found that Gracy Travel out of Texas will do this alone for a fee. (From now on I will book everything to Africa through them.) They've been in business for over 40-years. My contact is Kasey at [HIDDEN].
Good luck!!

Thanks for posting this. It's really important to think of things like this when traveling through Europe with weapons. I will add that I would never do a layover with less that 2 hours.

KLM swears that my two flights are "married" and everything will go through. There is another flight coming in the next morning and at worse case the rifle will show up then. I did have to wait around in "Joberg" an extra day last year waiting for a pair of rifles that didn't make the transfer in Atlanta the day before. I had tracking devices on the rifles and could see that the were not being loaded on my plane as we were starting the engines. Whenever the unforeseen/unexpected happens over there you just have to shrug and say "oh well thats Africa".

Hopefully you'll be fine. These days I'm sceptical about what the airlines say.

BTW, what tracking device do you use; that's a great idea đź‘Ť
