Vld target vs VLD hunting

I haven't, but I wouldn't shy away from it either. Do a search and you'll find that plenty of people have. LRO might have more post on that subject. Clear the tips and stay off the shoulder is what I would do.

Interesting. The "target bullets" have heavier jackets so I'd think it would be beneficial for expansion to stay ON the shoulder. But ... that's just a thought because I've only used their "hunting" bullets on game.
Could be. But I'll stick with hitting them behind the shoulder. I've stopped shooting game on the shoulder even with traditional hunting bullets like Partitions or AB's. YMMV.

I think John Barsness tested them through the shoulder on red stag. I remember an article he wrote on testing Bergers with Walt Berger on game. So a shoulder shot might be okay, I just prefer a shot behind the shoulder.

John,

I had somebody tested, loaded, hunted with, and cooked quite a few games with 215s. LOL!

I use the 230 gr target hybrid ( I know you asked about VLDs but it is the thicker jacketed target design) on elk from a 300 RUM. I don't get tags often but when I do this rifle mashes them flat. A cow presented the only shot with her shoulders in an opening at 250 yds. The bullet went through both scapula and she dropped right there. A 6 x 6 bull was facing me at a quartering angle at 150 yds. The bullet was put through the point of the leading shoulder and exited behind second shoulder. He ran 10 ft and collapsed. There was minimal meat damage as impact velocities were in the 2500-2700 fps range.

My friend regularly shoots coues wt with his 7 Rem mag using 180 target hybrids, velocity 2950 fps. It was chosen for minimal wind drift for those long shots usually necessary for these deer. I have witnessed many kills out to 600 yds. The bullet always exits and the deer succumb quickly.

I use MOSTLY Berger target bullets in my hunting rifles. I like the slightly thicker jackets. I still put the shots tucked in behind the shoulder. No issues with expansion or very quick kills. I have only recovered 4 bullets total, all just under the offside hide.

6CM w. 105 Hyb & 115 VLD Target
25SST w. 135 Hyb
25CM w. 135 Hyb (new-have not shot big game yet)
6.5SLR w. 130 OTM & 140 VLD Target
.260 Rem w. 140 Hyb
.260AI w. 140 hyb (new-have not shot big game yet)
6.5SS w. 130 OTM, 140 Hyb, 144 Hyb
7SS w. 184 Hyb (new-have not shot big game yet)
7RM w. 180 Hyb or 184 Hyb
.300RUM w. 215 Hyb & 230 Hyb

I couldn't count how many other rifles I have loaded for that use Berger "target" or "match" bullets that have killed a ton of game.

Anyone used VLD targets on game? Particularly deer and elk? Gun would be a 28 nosler with a 1in8.4 twist going roughly 3100 fps.
I've been shooting and hunting with Berger's 180 grain VLD Hybrid target bullets for nine years in my Gunwerks 7LRM. They have performed flawlessly on Deer, Elk, Eland, Kudu, Giraffe and other big game. Load data: 72.3 grains H-1000 producing 3060 fps from the 1:8.5 twist.

What's average impact velocity with the Berger bullets? What's the highest and lowest impact velocities have you shot? I hunt mainly woodland where a lot of shots are under 100 yards, so impact velocities are high and I'm worried bullets will blow apart.

If most shots are a 100 or less why would you pick a long range vid bullet?.
Sounds like a job for a bonded bullet or a monolithic bullet
