Rem 700 30-06 Upgrade

I have a couple of 30-06's and would leave it alone if it shoots.
If I wanted another caliber and if your shots aren't too long take a look at the 35 Whelen or even 35 Whelen AI.I have made 300 yard shots at deer and it is impossible to die any quicker.
Hogs and black bear hate the 250 gr Hornadys.225 gr Barnes TSX shoot a lot flatter.
But I like your choice to leave it alone, good choice!

I use a Remington Model 700 338-06 24" barrel as my do all gun. I'm handloading 200 grain Speer Hotcore bullets at an average of 2800 FPS. You can buy factory bullets but they are very easy to load. You can size 30-06 brass up or buy a good quality brass already made.
My gun was a "custom build" off of an old 30-06 rifle that I found in a pawn shop. David Christaman out of Delhi, Louisiana did the build and the gun is a sub moa gun with any load that I have put through it.
I love the 338-06 round and it doesn't hammer you like a magnum but hit hard.
Good luck on your selection.!

Sounds like you need a plain jane 308, or if you want to get a bit more esoteric, a 338 Federal.

Maybe something in .338, 358, 9.3mm, 8mm or .375. . You really have the hi velocity cartridges covered at this point. What you do not have is a 10lbs. hammer with a 5 foot swing!

Sure the argument could be made that you 300 WM can fire 210gr. -230gr. really solidly constructed bullets to take the place of much larger cartridges but since you have the rifle might as well use it. A 220gr round nose fired from a 30-06 is devastating combo under 500m.

The most important thing to do to that Remington is truing the front receiver face if going with a traditionally machine barrel with a tenon and mating surface that mates to the receiver face. Do a Remage and you can eliminate the need for that. A full on blue print would be better still but not required for a hunting rifle.

Since you already have a lot of hi velocity cartridges the last thing that would make any sense would be more of the same. That is like the guy that owns 7 Remington's all chambered for 30-06 because that the best cartridge ever invented! LOL

If you were wanting to continue the trend with hi velocity at the very least check out the .338 RUM since it has both hard hitting soldily constructed hunting bullets and hi velocity. 338 LM performance on a standard length non-magnum action.

I do believe the Remage is the way to go. If I'm not mistaken I can also get a second barrel in a different caliber.

Nothing wrong with leaving it chambered for the 30-06 cartridge. In recent years mine has taken:

antelope
mule deer
black bear
elk
wolf
grizzly

So... Ya, its pretty viable as a hunting cartridge. Clean it up and shoot it, see how it works for you just the way it is.

Regards, Guy
