what is long range hunting shooting off hand? is it the same as shooting prone from a freshly grazed knoll down onto antelope 1000 yards away?

the only reason I bring this up is that lots of people seem to ask question about getting into long range shooting and hunting...they in turn receive advice to go out and spend their childrens college fund on a rifle, glass and range finder.. when they cant max out the m1 garand they got in the closet...

so...if yer young, broke and looking for advice to become a crack shot....I have the perfect advice...

TAKE THE REMAINDER OF THE MONEY YOU HAVE AND BUY THE RCBS ROCK CHUCKER PRESS AND DIES....GET SOME POWDER AND START RELOADING...

shooting long range and reloading go hand in hand...seriously...you cant really do one without the other...not on any kind of budget...

learn the skills...watch the tibosaurausrex sniper 101 videos on the youtube…

develop skills...reading the wind...

as you outrun yer equipment...upgrade it. spending 1500 bucks on a tikka 6.5 creed and a vortex scope will surely get you where you want to go.....without any education what so ever....

getting the 308 will get you there as well and make a rifleman out of ya.

People like you? You can use whichever bathroom you want but I'll stick to the one with the urinals. There now were even. whatever preconceived problem you have with half the users of this site would be better off voiced somewhere else. You want advice, ask a question. You want to call out people for no reason, I hope you can suck it up when it comes back to you. Progression doesn't happen without profit. If people didn't buy the "$6000 guns" and other pricey gear you can't stand this sport would be as profitable as foosball. Have you noticed any groundbreaking innovations in foosball equipment lately?
For what it's worth a lot of people give others great advice on here but with that attitude I wouldn't help you do anything. Maybe that's why people rub you the wrong way?

Well to the OPs original question/the tread title, long range to me is when I have to start correcting for wind and bullet drops to make ethical shots from my zero. For me that's some where around 400 yards. I'm not sure what's wrong with having a $6,000 rifle if that's what you want and have the money to buy it. For the record I don't have anything anywhere near that price and for my budget won't for the for seeable future (although I'd sure as hell love one). As already mentioned there are plenty of people in any hobby/sport that can afford really nice equipment, some guys save up for a long time to afford that one custom. I'm not really sure how that's a bad thing if someone decides that's what they want. I agree if the OPs point was that you don't need a $6000 rifle to get into long range and learn the shooting skills necessary to shoot long range (whatever that means for you).

His original post seems to be a pointless rant about people that like high end rifles, reiterated by this comment. Apparently the advice of people with high end gear is subpar to his extremely specific rifle/scope recommendations. No it does not take a bag of money to shoot long range and yes there are some inexpensive pieces of equipment that work great. I could pick this apart but I think I made my point.
 
Plus if you learn to use the search tool, you will find out that your question to "what is longrange hunting and shooting to different people" has been talked about on this website in many threads.

Diverse place here, that's what makes it good. Anyone from the long time longrange shooter to the new shooter can learn something.

Dok7mm is correct. For a short period of time, I used to be a number 3 on his list. Then after shooting for a while and learning, I found out it was more practical for me to be in the number 2 listing.

I think of long range starting at about 400 yards, the distance more or less if your estimate of the distance is off by 25% you miss or crippled the game. I'm old enough to remember when 400 was a long shot. Hell I deployed as a sniper with the secret service for two Presidents before I'd ever seen a lazer range finder.
My hunting limit is about 500
A distance that slung up and prone I can drill a 10 inch plate.
 
The comment about maximizing your equipment to the best of your ability made great sense, and I think you did a great job in proving your own point "about most people get the wrong impression from people like you" that being that regardless of the price of your rifle it don't cost any extra to have a little class when trying to make a point, lotta guys on here with spendy rigs that I'm sure would have done what they could to help you out, probably not so much now ...
 
Huh, I have a $6,000 rifle...so what does that mean. I'm not as "old" as several of the seasoned shooters on here. However I have been shooting long range for quite a while. Been pushing "my" limits for a while, and yes that means hunting game long range. I have outgrown my equipment's capabilities and have been upgrading over the years. I joined the Army to be a Sniper and have a few more years before I retire. I remember when I was about 9 and got a used Shooters Bible, and how I obsessed over the ballistic data/charts that were in the back. I never outgrew that obsession, it has probably gotten worse. I've said it more than once on here (as if I need to justify anything to anyone) that my rifle is my hot rod. Every man has a purpose, mine is to be behind a rifle.

Edited to add: I also have a $350 Ruger American that is a great shooter, and a very good lighter hunting rifle. It's not snobby to own a nice piece of equipment. It is pretty crappy to look down on someone who does...actually seems a bit envious to me.

If you are trying to lump people with expensive rigs here to people that have expensive sports cars but don't drive them in anything but a straight line and can't drive them to anywhere near their potential, maybe I could see where you are going with this.

If that is your point, I think you have the forum demographics all wrong. IMO, people here have a thirst for knowledge and lean on each other to elevate their own individual knowledge as well as the collective knowledge of the forum. There aren't many people that have show rifles here...the only way to become proficient and get better is to practice and soak up knowledge. I think that most (almost all) here take that approach with shooting and hunting, regardless of the cost of their equipment.

If that isn't your point, I am not sure what point you are making and your post comes across as uninformed and filled with jealousy, and condescending in telling people you have the right approach and they don't.

And whatever point you were trying to make was packaged in a way that turned plenty of people off from trying to help you. Bees, honey, and vinegar comes to mind.

I am new to this forum but I do believe in learning your rifle. My first rifle as with of you was a Daisy BB gun. That thing shot to the right right out of the box. After 1000's of tubes of bb's I learned the rifle and how far to the left to hold at different ranges. There wasn't a grasshopper, lizard or sparrow that was safe out to 40 yards. ( at least that's what my memory tells me ). I've never attempted a 1000 yard shot but I am pretty comfortable with 400 yrds because that's the longest range I can safely shoot. Pract, practice, practice.

Apparently I'm somewhere in between. I have two ultra-lite Weatherby 6 lug. One is a 270 Winchester and the other is my Wildcat 6.5 Coyle. Both were purchased used. The 6.5 has a Pac nor Barrel fluted by Twisted Barrel with a homemade brake.
