I have a left hand Rem 700 in 7mm that's been in my family for years.....it getting to the point where I want to put a new barrel on it, and have almost jumped on some barrels that I have seen for sale but I'm really torn on what I want......help me make up my mind! This rifle will primarily be used for high mule deer hunt when I finally draw the tag, and a little bit of long range steel. I mainly plink steel with my 260 and that probably won't change.
My original thought was to keep it in 7mmRM just because I'm set up for it, and it's relatively inexpensive to shoot.....cheaper it is, the more I shoot it. Barrel contour and length.....I am thinking about going 26", but am hung up on contours. I had originally thought something close to a #4 sporter, but after reading many online posts, I'm wondering I'm going to wish I had went heavier.....Anyone like #4ish sporter or what contour would you use? Sorry but as cool as it would be a CF barrel is out of my budget.
Lastly I'm torn between doing my first Remage vs having a Smith shoulder it.....if Smith is your route do you have a smith recommendation in SW Washington?
Thanks in advance!

Definitely keep it 7mmRM. Great cartridge. Go with a 26" Proof Research Sendero contour barrel, with a 1:8 twist for the Berger 195 Elite Hunters for those big game animals, and the LR targets.

If the CF barrels are out of the price range, a Bartlein Sendero fluted 26" 1:8 is a great compromise of weight and function for both hunting and LR shooting.

I wouldn't do the remage, too many things can go wrong, IMO. I like the standard shouldered style. There is another way to build a switch-barrel, and it seems to be long-forgotten these days, but I prefer it. You have the smith pin your recoil lug to your action, and then have multiple barrels chambered for your action, and make it a switch-barrel that way. That would be the best style of switch-barrel. The only drawback is it requires you to have an action wrench and a barrel vise...Both of which are commonly found at most all online gun accessory places like Midway and Brownells.

Keep it 7 mag, your vested in that cartridge any way and its a Fine one to boot!!!. i'm good with your 26 inch bbl, #4 contour or a #5 would be great. Stainless steel would be very good n weather resistant ,another Big plus would be Cut-rifled, vs Buttoned rifling . a Remington varmit contour would be to heavy up in the mountains , unless Your Popeye ! your gunsmith needs to be found, sure someone will chime in a help you here . and that course will go one way or the other conserning the remage vs Smith shoulder it . good luck keep us posted , thks!!!

3b to 5 contour with flutes would be optimal if you want to keep weight down and still have a rigid barrel at the 26in length which will be perfect. I'd shoulder the rifle barrel, go tried and true but that's just my preference.

I did my first Remage in 7mag with a heavy varmint barrel from Criterion; it is a crome moly. It took some time to break in but the rifle flat out shoots! I'm very happy I did the Remage. I'll pack a little weight to know I have long range accuracy. 26" is ideal for a magnum.

Another satisfied Criterion customer! Reading comments from others on this site about their Criterion barrels, is what got me thinking about doing a Remage on this one...... a fluted Chrome moly barrel for $435.00 seems hard to beat if you get what others say they are getting! I wouldn't do Remage for a switch barrel, as this barrel is probably the last barrel this action will see in my lifetime, it would be more for the fun of putting it together and saving cost......But at the same time I have been disappointed in the past when I try save money and a shouldered barrel just looks nicer.....And yes there is the whole cut rifled vs button debate.

I would probably stick with the 7RM or .300wm and at least a "magnum contour" or "bull magnum contour" which is a bit lighter than the light varmint contours.

I'd rather have the extra weight vs a thin whippy barrel or a gun that's so light it's hard to get steady.

The older I get the shakier I get so that becomes more and more of an issue but even for the young and steady field conditions often make it a real challenge especially when shooting from unconventional positions or in the wind and when you're hunting west of the Mississippi wind is almost always a factor. When you get above 5,000' it's a virtual certainty you'll be dealing with considerable wind.

Of course there's also the simple fact that the lighter the gun is the more significant the felt recoil is going to be no matter what kind of can or brake is on it.

The 3B Bartlein in 26" fluted sits on my 7RM. It's a #4/5 in other makers contour. It's a great contour for LR. I also use in on my 7STW and 6.5 Sherman, all 3 are 5Rs. A 9 twist will work on 7RM just fine, but if you're gonna shoot the 180+ grain pills, you might go 1:8.

what ever you do it dont matter....ya got the right idea.....284 any way it comes is gret…..I love my sporter….takes longer to snap off the shots...but shoots 1/4 moa when I shoot 1/4 moa....I love those guns...I honestly think you should own every caliber in every barrel configuration in every stock platform that there is....yes sir...if you die with 10000 guns...you win.....

mine is a 28(27 finished) an its in 7mmRM. Its a #5 from Brux shoots .364 @100yrds for 5 shots

Can you elaborate on remage going wrong? It is a proven design with savage rifles and I've done 3 switch barrel builds and all worked well. Was thinking about converting my Remington.
