Eradicate the Wolf???!

Concerning the question of size difference and two different wolves!
I'm no biologist but I do know the animals of the far north aren't the same animals that reside below the 48th parallel!
Because of the extreme cold of the far north -- and I'm talking about 40, 50, 60 below zero Fahrenheit – it takes a far larger body mass in order to retain enough body heat to survive those temperatures – and that's a fact!
I've seen moose in the far north that looked to be as big as a house while the moose of Wyoming and Utah are half that size. Same goes for elk, deer, black bears and other critters – including the wolf! Before eradication down here, the wolves below the 48th wouldn't have been able to compare in size to the Canadian Timber Wolf of the far north!
Think about it! Look at the size of the Whitetail deer of Texas compared to the Whitetail of Michigan. Same goes for the red wolf of the southern states. A smaller body is needed in warmer climates in order to dissipate the body heat and a larger body is needed in colder climates in order to retain the body heat! That happened due to natural selection!
Therefore – I believe the wolf that was eradicated below the 48th parallel wasn't the same wolf that was introduced from Canada.

Dogs are most closely related to Grey Wolves, sharing an ancestor back about 15000 yrs ago, with that ancestor having been determined to be extinct, this doesn't not mean a poison designed to work on a dog, will effectively work on a wolf. The amount used has to take into account the Largest animal likely to be encountered and since a lot of people like to let Bowser run loose...you still have the issue with killing peoples pets...not going to fly.

I could call a biologist I have worked with and get more details, but this is a LR hunting/sub forum, not Biology review :)

Poisons in use the last time I had to deal with them are: Strychnine , Sodium Cyanide and Compound 1080..they are lethal to everything.

The information is available for everyone to read, but apparently no one wants to read it...The far northern wolves that everyone seems fixated on are not what we are talking about in Montana or Idaho or Central Alberta....point to point between the area where these wolves were transplanted from at max 1000 miles..similar climate, terrain and wildlife and even of the same subspecies historically.....

Comparing a game animal from a far northern clime to that of it's extreme southern range is going to show a big difference...but the same animal within a thousand miles or less of each other in the same climate, terrain ...I couldn't tell you where it came from...unless there was some distinct genetic marker or environmental factor...that would indicate where it came from...your guess would be as good as mine.

Here is a wolf shot near Drayton Valley, just north of my Uncle's.

It weighed in at 197lbs.

I know geography is relative, but we are by no means 'far north'...

Then again, biologists must know better than locals, right?

Hey Diamondback, you keep spouting off about "playing God" with the re-introduction of wolves. What exactly was going on when they were **** near exterminated? Playing God perhaps? mtmuley

I will call that phase - Natural Selection. They were exterminated and no **** near about it. There was no playing God about it. The men with rifles slew the beast and exterminated him in the lower 48 states. No spouting about it Bro = fact. It is called HISTORY. I obey the laws and pay for my hunting licenses at Walmart just like everyone else man. Maybe you want to rewrite our history in some grand liberal utopian scheme? Kum Bye ya Walt Disney movie BS? I obey the laws and even though I can hunt wolves or Griz, not worth my time or $$$ bro. I could care less. The wolves will kill off their elk food sources off in the next 15 years and then starve out. If you study how they are decimating elk herds, the elk can't reproduce fast enough and it is an eventual death sentence for both and some Griz. So much for playing God right? Google it.

The man with a Rifle slew the beast and exterminated him in the lower 48 states. No spouting false about it Bro = fact. It is called HISTORY. Man was created in the image of God BTW. The wolf serves no purpose and is a ornament for do gooders to think they make a difference when HISTORY proves the ecosystem goes on without them. There are coyotes that are still present if it makes you feel better about your 4 legged friends. I shoot them to BTW. A 223 Rem does that fine with SP or Ballistic Tips. That isn't playing God. That is Wildlife management BTW.
People like you do way more harm than good for hunters. mtmuley

Diamondback...hate to burst your bubble...but Wolves themselves were never exterminated to zero in the lower 48....Sustainable breeding populations were in many regions...but even within the Yellowstone Park regions from 1927-1977 there were hundreds of probable sightings..that originally were discounted..later impartial review reversed that belief...

Manifest destiny....anyone?

The wolves are killing machines and are on an all out buffet in the USA. When the elk are gone in areas, they will relocate to find food in other states and keep populating or die off.

This is a map 8 years ago and wolves have populated a lot more since then.

Current population of elk estimates:
Washington state = 60,000
Montana= 163,000
Oregon= 125,000 elk
Wyoming= 93,000

Wolves are God's creatures. Hunt them, hell yeah. Exterminate them, no.

If the wolf population has increased 300% since 2011, what has happened to the elk population?
GoHunt has some information, but not completely up to date.
https://www.gohunt.com/read/elk-numbers-across-6-states#gs.LI6w6wc

Those reports of 200# wolves are outright lies. Isn't a 120# wolf Freighteningly big enough? Why believe made up stories on the internet?
