Ok so I'm a 6.5/7mm guy but I've got the itch to put a hard hitting 30 cal together, last one this time;)

The main application will be elk beyond 1k (I've actually found a spot where that will be common).

I want to shoot 225 ELD's, and maybe 245 Bergers whenever they come out..
I would like to hear what you guys think about the 30 Nos vs. 300 Norma, and what will be the velocity advantage with heavies from the Norma

I'm wanting the scoped weight to be around 9 lbs, and 27" max barrel length. Throated for heavies of course

Does anyone have experience with 225's or 230's in a 30 Nosler??
I can't find anything about velocity with this combo

I like the Norma for a number of reasons, however it requires a Lapua sized bolt face and narrows your choice of actions. If you're going full custom, Norma all the way . Better brass , more horsepower and super easy to tune .

Have you shot 225 or 230's in your Norma?
If so could you please share your velocity and barrel length

The 30 Nosler will push 225-230s 2950 in a 26" with Retumbo 2950-3000 with N570. It will go over 3k with RE33 which I am not a fan of. I personally think the 215 is a better bullet so that is what I will be sticking with in my 30 Noslers. Just because the case will push the bullet that fast does not mean there will be accuracy there. I Love the 30 Nosler but I do think the Norma is a better case I just do not want a Lapua action. I feel some of the lapua bolt face actions out there are not really cut out for the job. I shoot a lot and do not want to deal with bolt lug set back.

I have a 300 Norma. I built mine on a Weatherby Mark V. It has a 1-10 kreiger 25 in barrel. I like MRP in the Norma...I get a solid 3000 fps out of it some times a tick more with 225 ELDs the Nosler was be hard pressed to keep up. I will also say--one of my gunsmith friends has built maybe 5 300/338 Norma's on R.E.M. 700 and clones with no problems--it is just a bit more work...I like the 300 norma a lot--easy to tune, and fast enough...just my two cents.

Could you please explain what you mean about lapua bolt face issues, and bolt lug set back

The larger case diameter has more surface area on the case head. This applies more force to the bolt which causes more force to be applied to the lug abutments. It is well documented that in many, if not most, cases will cause lug abutment set back. A lot of smiths will not even build a Laupa bolt face cartridge on a action not specifically built for it and I am not talking about one with a correct bolt face. I obviously can not tell you what to do but I would not do it. I would do some checking around with many different smiths before proceeding.

  • Bolt lug set back is caused when cartridges that generate too much pressure and bolt thrust cause the bolt lugs to form indentations into the lug recesses in the receiver.
Bolt lug setback are shiny depressions in the face of the lug recesses that are typically pushed back most of the time .005 You need to remove the barrel to inspect this area of the receiver.
Bolt lug set back causes excessive headspace in the rifle. The sidewalls of the cartridge case can stretch near the head area, and if reloaded could case a head separation.
(copied from the net did not feel like writing it out--and think it answers your question)

Well in my opinion more than the lugs, The other big issue is the case diameter in the tenon, and this may be more important than the other. It can easily cause over straining of the barrel which can over a short time cause tough extraction, especially with top end loads of a 300/338 Norma 338 Lapua That being said l shoot with a gent that has well over 1,000 rounds thru a Remington 700 Lapua with no issues--and my gunsmith as built 5-6 Norma's both of the 300 and 338 varieties with no issues I know about. He is not conserned with the safety. Jimmy Sloan that developed the round developed it to go into a standard 700 type. Platform...so I'm kind of divided.

When I built my 300 Norma I had a Weatherby Mark V. I have had zero issues.. but it is a big, strong action

Very good break down. I would say the Weatherby action is sufficient. I have heard of it happening on plenty of 700s and clones so I would be very careful of your action choice.

Dang....
I'm planning on using a ti Lapua action from Mesa arms. Would I have any issues with an action specifically designed for the lapua?

Having a .588 bolt face and being specifically designed for the Lapua are not neccassarily the same thing. Just do some homework before you jump in.
