They are. I use a different knife for gutting, cutting up animal. Straight blade is last ditch on the ground if comes to that and possible. I'm a prepper. I want to have ever chance I can get if it happens. Did you watch the video I posted and the guy that got mauled by griz ?

I carry both, bear spray and an 8 in. Straight blade knife.

Red dot on my 460 S&W works well with deer (whitetail) but I won't carrying while hunting Mule deer or elk. To heavy. Too slow. Too slow to get back on target from recoil. I know if I have to I can get off two shots with one of my 10mm compared to my 460 S&W or 454 Cassul Ruger Super Redhawk...
