    Lack of lapua brass

I prefer Lapua brass for my 223 bolt gun setups. I don’t have direct experience with Norma, but I did have good luck with Starline in 223. I believe it’s cheaper than Norma and could be a good bridge until Lapua 223 becomes available. I don’t have any 22-250 rifles, so no opinions to add there.

    What barrel contour for chassis

I vote for straight 1.2" or 1.25" or MTU, although quite a few profiles can be similar. I use each of those and a Proof Research Competiton profile without issues in an MPA BA Comp and MPA BA Hybrid chassis without issues.

So how hard is it to build your own rifle

Another vote for “it’s not hard”. I wish I would have started it sooner than I did. I’ve had good luck with prefit barrels, and you can use one action for a variety of barrels if you want. I buy stocks with internal chassis or just a regular chassis that is swappable between different actions...

    Illinois handgun season?

When this new rule was announced, I was originally planning on using a 300 Blackout AR upper. Based on my interpretation of the rules, I could have used a “0” round magazine sled and single loaded a round. Since then, the AR ban made it illegal to use those firearms (even if “registered”) on...

    Lightweight Elk Scope

I would add another vote for the Trijicon Tennile. I haven’t had issues with mine, and I like the glass. I will have to admit that I’ve always had problems really differentiating between upper mid-tier (say $2k range) and top tier glass (say $3k range). When comparing side by side, it’s just...

What is the one piece of hunting/shooting advice you would give yourself if you could go back in time

Same sentiment expressed by many others: start collecting points and planning for good mountain hunts when I was younger. There were affordable DIY options I didn’t realize existed, and that would have been the time to take advantage.

    22 for daughters

I bought my son a S&W M&P 15-22, and it’s worked well. He started with it around 7 years old, and the collapsible butt stock makes it really easy for the LOP to “grow” with him. As a side bonus, I find it fun to shoot, too.

    Need suggestions on next steps.

I have also come to appreciate the Berger COAL testing procedure that was outlined above. It’s certainly not the only way, but it has worked for me.

    223 Rem. Loads

I enjoying loading for 223 and have tried a very wide array of powders and bullets. Most of my bullets are between 69 and 75 grains for both bolt and AR guns. I typically find myself grabbing VV N-140 for extruded powder uses, which is when I’m trying to get a more accurate and consistent load...
