8 twist 22” 300 Win Mag with 215 Berger Hybrids

You bring up a good point. I have a 22” 300wsm that is really light. Maybe I should use that for my backpack hunts and treat this new build as more of a long range rig that is less maneuverable, but achieves maximum ballistic potential. I need to mull that one over a bit.

Deal! Mine should be done in about 5 weeks. I will reciprocate if I get it done before you! Also, what do you see in weight savings from a steel barrel to your sendero countour proof barrels? Let’s assume like steel #3 contour from bartlein

Thanks Gordo, that is good feedback. If I decide to go with a 24” inch or longer tube, I guess I could explore 230 bergers and h1000. An 8 twist should be perfect for that scenario. If I end up going with a 22” barrel I suspect I will be lucky to get 215s to 2800fps. If you were in my shoes...

8 twist 22” 300 Win Mag with 215 Berger Hybrids

Thanks, that is helpful info. Should be an awesome build! I like the proof barrel. I live in Colorado and do all my shooting above 5000 feet as well. I am sure a 10 twist would be fine for me. Makes me wonder if an 8 twist is almost too fast for 215’s?

I agree, hard to go back to muzzle breaks and loud guns once you shoot with a can. I’ve been shooting short mags for a few years with cans and the elk have no idea where the shot came from. I’ve had two occasions where the group of elk ran towards us after the shot. That can’t seem to pinpoint...

You bet. 4350 is on the list. I use in in my 30wsms with great results. I’m still kicking around going to a 24” tube..... I can always cut off a few inches if I hate it.......as you can tell I’m waffling on 22” or 24”....

That is great feedback, thanks for the response. I live at 6000 feet and shoot between 6000 and 10000 feet depending on where I go. I suspect I could probably get away with slower twist barrel but I selected an 8 twist on the chance I wanted to play with 230 Berger’s or the new Sierras. Also, if...

Wow, that’s a shooter! What barrel length and twist are you running? What is the COL?

Wow, that is hauling ***! I have two 300 wsm’s and The fastest I can get with 200 ELDX’s is about 2825....I have one with a 24” tube and one with a 22” barrel inch tube. In reality I think the 300wsm is better suited for 180s and below. Not enough magazine space for the longer pills. Thus the...

Thanks for the feedback, you raise some good points. Unfortunately, I don’t really want to buy a new can if I don’t have to. Maybe I jump up to 24” barrel? But then I have a pretty long gun with the can. I guess I really need a bull pup design to help shorten the whole package, but an 11 pound...

8 twist 22” 300 Win Mag with 215 Berger Hybrids

I am building a new long range elk rifle and I need some advice from the wise folks on this forum. First off, I’m 100% committed to using my Thunderbeast Ultra 7 can on this build. I shoot supressed on all my rifles and just can’t go back to shooting without a can. That constraint creates some...
