I have 8 boxes of old stock (and 3 boxes of newer stock) of the Remington Premier Scirocco Bonded ammunition factory loaded in the 7mm Remington Ultra Magnum. These are all factory loaded with the 150 gr. Swift Scirocco bonded bullets. I no longer have the rifle to shoot them and have decided to...
The new 338 Weatherby RPM is a standard bolt face that should deliver — all four factory loads have at least 1700 ft-lbs at 500 so @ 600 there should still be plenty of punch
I went with the 6.5 WBY RPM (lengthened 6.5x284) instead of the .264 Win. Mag. It offers about the same performance (maybe a touch more) without the pesky belt or the need for a magnum action. I’m not done with load development but mine shoots the 127 LRX factory load into 1 ragged hole so I’m...
I put one together with a Proof Stock and Sendero Light 26” CF barrel… weighed less than 6 pounds. Shooting 140’s at almost 3500 FPS wasn’t any worse than the 180’s I shoot from my 300 RUM (700 SPS/9 lbs).
They both need a brake to prevent flinching; however.
With the budget in mind, and 400 being the barrier on game, I don’t see any reason to move past the .308Win.
I’d probably get it in a Savage 16 and top it off with a ZEISS V4 Conquest 6-24x50.
I actually have a Remington 700 set up this way. It shoots 1 ragged hole with the Nosler 165 E-Tip...
I’m still or out of factory ammunition— yet
I’ll be working on loads with IMR 7977 and 8133 with 150 Scirocco and 175 Nosler ABLR once I run out though
I currently shoot a 300 RUM that weighs over 12 lbs with Norma 180s and the recoil is still barely manageable. I also shoot a 7 RUM (8-1/2#) that recoils enough to bump my forehead with the scope just slightly on about 1/2 of my shots with 140s… I still prefer the 7 RUM. I almost switched to the...
I don’t blame you— for shooting @1000 it’s not necessary but for carrying adequate terminal energy/velocity that far for ethical hunting, it really is necessary though.
280 Ackley Improved with a 26” or longer barrel using 168 NABLR or similar would be the lightest that I would consider (I...
The 280 and 7 RM are too close for me to want to invest… if it’s vastly superior to the 7 RM, I might change my mind— like closer to the 7 WBY?
I am in the middle of an email exchange on the subject myself— hopefully, there’s enough interest for that to get done!
I have been pondering the benefits of any and all of the options… so far, I have not found it to be a viable project:
7mm/6.5 Wby RPM reamer is available and seems to be a duplicate of the 7 RM (so is the .280 Ackley Improved that I already have). 30/6.5 Wby RPM seems like the best option but I...
