I'm not an expert but it deals with color correction to allow for a sharper image. The ED means Extra-low Dispersion glass. You can google it to get a better explanation or maybe someone can explain in more detail.

The magnification would matter if you were using a mildot or other ranging reticle or a point of aim different from the center of the cross hairs.
