Stuck on new rifle caliber Go big or go home?

Why won't your 280 Ackly do what you are asking? 162 AMax at 3000 fps or even 160 Accubonds should easily fit the bill you described. To make a reasonable step up from the 280 AI you will probably want to jump to the super-mag level though you probably don't need to.------SS

    SOLD/EXPIRED Browning BLR 358 Win

For those asking about accuracy. I took this gun to the range today and shot some Factory Winchester 200 grain loads. 1 1/4" is about what I get with hand loads as well. The barrel is a bit thin and it gets warm quick.-------SS

    28 nosler help?

Above advice is good. My 28 seems to really shine with powders like Retumbo, RL 33, and N217. I didn't have any luck with H1000, RL-25, or MRP. Mine really likes N217.----SS

    .280 AI& monolithics

My 280AI loves the 145 LRX in front of RL-23. Start at 55 grains and work up. Mine ended up at about 3150fps from a 25" Shilen. I follow Barnes recommendation and seat .05" off the lands. ----SS

Getting my Dad a scope for his 60th birthday. Opinions?

I personally love the VX3 2.5-8. Great lightweight scope with plenty of eye relief. I have 4 of these on different rifles and the service in all cases has been excellent.----SS

    280 ackley load info

I shoot 162 AMax bullets in front of 58 grains of RL-22. Great accuracy and an easy 3050 fps from my 26" Shilen. My gun will take 61 grains without showing pressure at over 3100 but accuracy is not as good.-------SS

22-250 re barrel to deer rifle

If it's just for hunting, be super cool and re barrel it to its parent case the 250-3000 Savage. 600 on deer might be a stretch but it would get there. I'm currently working on a 257 Robt. imp and it is a sweetie to shoot. I think that a light little handy 250 would be pretty darned useful. I...

    Cool old rifle

Mountain man, Not sure what I would do in your shoes. I lucked out and didn't have to make that decision. I do think it's cool that this rifle was done so long ago as it still has the cool old feel. Reminds me of driving a 1960's muscle car. Might be strange to do a modern build on an old M70...

    Cool old rifle

Was lucky enough to pick up this cool old rifle. It is a 1950 Winchester Model 70 action with a 26" Shilen barrel and a Canjar trigger chambered in 257 Roberts Improved. The rifle is bedded nicely into a very fancy original stock. The gunsmith work was done in 1979 and it is topped with a...

    280AI at 1000 yards

280Ackley........great choice. If your going to leave the 'normal' realm of shooting you might as well do it right. Sounds like you have. My 280AI is one of my favorite guns to shoot. Mine loves 162 A-Max bullets. Messing around I got one on the paper at a mile and it made a perfect...
