Best weight bullet in 6.5x284 for Elk

I have shot 9 bulls with the 6.5x284. I have had the best performance with the Barnes bullets 120 grain ttx and 127 grain lrx. Longest blood trail around 30 yards, longest shot 425. I tried the Berger 130 VLD… not a good experience (bullet fragmented, only one hole) - found the elk by luck...

Help with Right handed / left eye dominant teen shooter

I shoot a left handed thumbhole stock with a right handed action... I am much faster and more coordinated with my right hand but am left eye dominant... for me this solution offers the best of both... Wayne York at Oregunsmithing did these stocks for me... reasonable priced... super high...

One binocular to rule the mountains

I agree - this is a great scope - 10x42 is the perfect tradeoff of size/functionality.

    Barrel length questions!

Hi, my wife and kids love the 6.5x284. With no muzzle brake and a light weight rifle it is a great combination (super low recoil, not too loud, easy to carry, super accurate). 22 inch barrel Shoot 120 grain Barnes 2900 FPS. Downside is that it is hard to find factory ammo.

    Elk bugle calls

I have tried many - I find that the ELK Power bugle is the easiest and most reliable to use. I have guided elk hunters for many years - you might want to know that you do not need to be a great caller - it is more about when to call/not call versus the sound you make. I had a friend open his...

    .280 or 6.5x284 for elk

I agree that the 6.5x284 is totally sufficient for elk - I like the 120 grain barnes TTX - accuracy is more important than bullet size and ft.lbs in my experience

    Barnes Ammo for Elk?

Yes... Barnes bullets are awesome on elk... I have taken many with 120 grain TTX... all under 400 yards.

    Bergara

I disagree with those that say a 6.5 is not enough for elk. I have been an elk outfitter in BC for >10 years and have killed a bunch myself. I now only carry a 6.5 with me - shooting 120 grain barnes TTX bullets. I am a firm believer that the low recoil makes a person a much better and...

    New 6.5-284

I shoot Barnes 120 TTX out of my 6.5x284 - had nothing but good luck - Lots of elk and deer + a mountain goat and moose. Nothing moved more than 10 yards. I was skeptical on the lightweight bullet but it does an incredible amount of damage.
