    whats in your pack?

Those big heavy duty contractors bags come in handy. You can cut them to make a tarp to lay on the ground when field dressing, put a head hole in them for an emergency rain poncho, make a wind break, emergency shelter or shade, etc., numerous uses and they don't weigh that much.

My 100lb plan for 2016 elk hunt

Backyardsniper-- I commend you. I will give you my personal experience. I am 6'3" and normally weigh in at 220-230. Went to the doctor and was almost 300 lbs. Went from a 37" waist to a 42" waist. I normally eat a big dinner and my down fall is Dr. Pepper. I usually have at least 4 32 oz. cups a...

    whats in your pack?

    Elk bullet

Here are photos of a 250 grn ShockWave recovered from a bull here in NM at 200 yards. First attempted shot was 50 yards and powder didn't go off. 2nd attempted shot was 125 yards and cap had fallen off nipple. Third shot went off and hit the bull, quartering to, went through top of heart, lungs...

    Old T/C 50 cal Hawkins

Is it a flintlock or percussion cap Hawken? If percussion you can use a black powder substitute. I have an old CVA percussion .50 Hawken with the 1:48 twist. It will shoot maxi balls with about 80 grains of Pyrodex real well.

    Stabilizers. short vs. long

Don't know since all I have shot is a 6" s-coil. My bow balances pretty well for me and the s-coil takes out some hand shock. It depends on what works for you and it seems to me if I am in thick brush I don't want a long stabilizer getting in my way.

Best route to avoid Dallas, Tx

You might try I-20 to US-69 up to Greenville. Then it is 380 across the N. of Dallas, McKinney to Denton to Decatur. I am not from there, never driven around there, and just looked at the map so it may be worse. Look at map quest to see what I am talking about.

    Best 270Win Load?

royinidaho--I have stretched it past the 400 yard mark on deer. When I was young and dumb I saw a buck feeding across 2 small canyons. Line of sight was +500 yards, long before the days of rangefinders and just a fixed Weaver K-6. I aimed for what I estimated was correct height but didn't...

    Pack in/ out service NM

Don't know of anyone personally but try the NMG&F site as they have a list of outfitters and guides. Also check with the Forest Service to see if they have a list. If I remember right 54 is north by the Co. border? I hunt south of I-40 so don't have much info for the north part of the state.
