Of the 3 choices you mention, I would recommend the Jewell if you are upgrading the rifle. I'd guess that I've used the Jewell on over 20 custom builds over the years and have not found anything to compare. For me, the trigger on a rifle is one of, if not the most important factors in...
Glad to see someone else has got an old Mohawk 600 around. I hadn't thought about mine in a lot of years until I decided to finally get the insurance inventory completed last weekend and dug the little gun out of the far dark corner of the safe. Brought back a lot of memories of S TX...
Last time I spoke with anyone who had inquired about their barrels they only produced button rifled barrels. At some of the "sale" prices they offer it doesn't seem like they've purchased the cut rifling equipment as yet.
I don't use Savages myself, but have a couple of friends who do. Both of them have changed out their own barrels and say it takes only a few minutes with the barrel wrench available from Midway. As far as truing the action, why not swap the barrel yourself, shoot it and see if the action needs...
I'm with you on the "screw it up" part. Several years ago I was hanging out with Speedy working on one of my P-dog guns and got a look at a barrel a guy brought in after taking a run at a barrel with netting and a bead blaster and saving the shop fee. First impression of the work was to find a...
Sounds like your gunsmith has either got you set up with a short barrel or is not using a Kenny Jarrett spec reamer if those are the max numbers. The Jarrett rifles are out the door at 4100 with a Nosler CT 70 gn bullet using a 1/8 29-30" tube. Somewhere in the process you're losing 400 fps...
I shoot a 6mm Catbird at 3985 with 107 SMK's. After trying several premium bullets including the Berger VLD's the SMK's have proven to offer the best groups by a considerable margin. Longest game shot I've taken was an antelope at 714 and had no problem dropping it without a step.
Great to run across another fan of "Speedy" rifles. At last count there were 9 in the safe. Glad to know there's someone good at the webbing and marking. If you get too much spare time, I've got about 4 rebarrels coming up!
Favorite would be 6mmAI shooting 70 grn Nosler ballistic tips or 95 grn Nosler CT's in the wind. My very close second in the favorite category is a 6 BR Improved shooting the 70 Noslers. For both I keep a few SMK 107 grn loaded when the dogs are running waaay out there.
Great Idea Forester ..... Next time you're down this way, stop in. I'll let you explain it to her will I tell your wife that I'm in the market for a safe full of guns ...:D
Glad you posted the military specs on the SMK. On a similar note, I am familiar with the years of test data developed by federal law enforcement regarding SMK's on both urban and long range uses. I think it will help a lot of folks that have been convinced that SMK's are the "non hunting"...
I've never shot a bad group except when undergoing extreme stress with my wife standing by complaining that my gun safe is larger than her refrigerator .....
I think a lot depends upon the state you're in. In my home state of Texas, where I still do about 75% of my hunting, I discussed this issue with a friend and game warden. His advise was to use the cell phone and call Natural Resources reporting a critically injured game animal giving your...
