    New Custom 280AI Range Report.

:D Good thinking, I've shot two chronographs so far. Looks like an awesome rig! Nice shooting...

Another thread of a beginner asking for opinions.

I might also consider the Savage line. Both the Savage and Remington will be easy to piece together with custom upgrades as time goes by.

    Norma 280 AI Brass

I don't know for sure, but I believe Norma actually makes the Nosler brass. But anyway... I do think thats's basically how it works. They have have a few manufacturing lines, and re-tool to make certain runs of brass. Then they re-tool again to make another line brass. So you will likely...

Help from Barnes 177 LRX users

I would hesitate to use a Berger inside of 100 yards on an elk :D For my 280ai, the 168 grn LRX would drop below 1800 fps at 725 fps (roughly, given environmental cond). That's probably as far as I'd go in my rifle. The Barns Marketing team says you could go as low as 1600 fps, which would be...

    RL26 in 280AI

For the 168 Berger VLD in my 280ai SAAMI Nosler brass Fed 215 primers 60.5 grains RL 26 (is max) 2950 fps 24" barrel I shoot it at 60.0 grains however. I know that wasn't the bullet/weight you were looking for, but it's just a reference point.

My new custom finally done. Pics

Very nice! I took a cow elk 2 weeks ago with my 280 Ack. Its a solid hunting cartridge! I've been using RL26, and 168 grain bullets. Both Berger VLD and Barns LRX. With the Bergers, I'm hitting pressure at about 2950 fps w/24" barrel. have fun!

    270 win powder?

When my Remington 270 was still a 270, I used H4831sc with 140 grain Accubonds. I didn't have a chrono at the time, so I'm not sure about speed. But it was very accurate. RL22 did well also.

Help from Barnes 177 LRX users

Sorry I can't really help. I took aim at a cow elk at 400 yards a few days ago, but didn't like my shot. Ended up stalking into 185 yards, and took the elk. 168 grain 7mm LRX MV 2900 fps 185 yards the cow went about 20 yards and fell over dead.

    Cow success

It's a Western Oregon (Scappoose Unit) damage control hunt. It's valid for the whole unit, this cow was taking on timber company land however. I had to have a permit to enter.

    Cow success

Took this cow yesterday. Easy shot at 185 yards. Used a 280 Ack with 168 grain Barns LRX. Bullet cleanly passed threw and she dropped about 20 yards from where she was shot.

What power scope for hunting to 400 yards?

I'm not a "long range" shooter at all. I find myself in the timber most of the time, only sometimes in an open clear cut, where a shot may be 4-600 yards. But anyway. The 3x9 VX2 is a good value. I also have a 4x12 VX2, also just fine. My 3.5x10 VX3 has been working well for me, but my...

    Help! Long range hunting build...

yeah, the 300 Norma would be cool. But starting out with factory ammo would be a killer. Looks like between $85-90 per box of 20. That would kill me. rolling our own... then yeah. That'd be a fun round.

280 AI and 168 gr Nosler LRAB

I'm holding a cow tag that goes through March 31st, but this is my first season with this rifle. So no animals taken yet. My barrel is a 1:8 twist. The Barns 168 LRX is a reallllly long bullet. I don't know if I've heard of too many having luck stabilizing them with a 1:9 twist or slower.

    Imr4350 imr7828 h1000 powders

7828 and 7828ssc have the same burn rate. Same with H4831 and H4831sc. You can use the data from one to substitute for the other.
