Run what ya brung!
You get a little more speed out of the VarTarg but you already have a perfectly good rifle in the Fireball. Why waste the opportunity to try it out?
If we spent more time hunting coyotes and less time talking about it, we'd have more real tangible fun.:Dgun)
I have 2 RRA rifles. Stainless heavy barrels on both. One 20", one 24". The longer one shoots a tad better but the coyotes wouldn't know the difference til you got past about 400 yds. Geissele trigger in the short one. RRA 2 stage in the long one. Great rifles but the long one is heavy...
Too much venison and squirrel in the freezer to consider peeling the hide off a stinky coyote. I have a friend in Iowa who has tried smoking the hams on one.
He says they're sneaky even after death. First bite, not too bad. Second one, the taste started to shine through. Couldn't get past...

Try a scope that is a known quantity. I've had good luck with Leupold glass and their guarantee Will fix it if it's broke.
Even factory ammo should get you...

A smokepole is a great way to hunt, but my only M/L is a 50 cal. in-line and I've seen what that does to a squirrel. 1/2 is perfect, 1/2 is missing.:D
Pistol is enough of a challenge for me.
Now that we've settled that, I need to start haunting the local gunshops and pawn establishments for a donor rifle. Stainless preferred, Remington 700 S/A or Savage 11 will work, I suspect.
Yup. Probably my only custom. Largest critter I'll probably ever take will be a white tail deer and past 400 yds is not in my nature to risk on game that size.
A couple of SD prairie dog hunts with the possibility of some bonus coyotes at greater distances are in my retired future. Maybe an...
