Mauser build 338-06 or 338 Win mag

One of my all time favourite rifles was an Austrian Mauser in 338-06. I also had a 338 Mag and there wasn't much more than 100 fps between them. I have owned 7-06AI, 8-06AI, and 30-06AI, and will never own another one. The extra fps is hardly worth the effort and smooth feeding and extraction is...

    Sako VS Browning

Sakos are finished better. The stainless stalkers have lousy triggers that need work right out of the box, and the barrels are great except that you might destroy the rifle trying to remove it. I have owned both in large magnum calibers and the synthetic stocks are comparable in shape although...

What is the most hated deer rifle you owned ?

One of the first rifles I ever built began with a P14 Enfield action which I put endless hours of work into making it a more modern configuration. I was proud of the finished product but Enfield barrels were hard to come by. It took me months to find one and when I did it was in .270 Win. It...

    What optic for this 3030

I'm with the red dot crew. If it is a good quality adjustable, shooting accurately out to 200 yards is no problem even for old eyes. The other issue is carrying. I've put scopes on lever actions in the past and they don't carry worth a ****. One of the reasons I prefer levers for hiking and...

    Opinions on prvi partizan brass

Prvi is the only manufacturer I could find that still makes 303 Savage brass. So far it is working well.

NonSportsman Dominate Montana FWP Wolf Meeting

People who love wolves don't know wolves. Yes, the puppies are cute and hearing the lonely howls at night can make an eventful camping trip but those people have never seen, and would probably refuse to watch, wolves making a kill. Just ask those wolf huggers sometime how wolves kill an animal...

    Buck Fever

Like everyone else I have battled the fever and like the best advice being given here I had to develop a routine that worked for me. One piece of advice I do give to others is to make your trigger the best it can be. If its sticky or heavy buck fever makes it worse.

Real world observations of G-bear populations this Fall

Many grizzly hunting restrictions are the result of false information put out by those trying to ban hunting. Here in British Columbia pictures of cute little grizzly cubs were used to tug at the hearts of non-hunters while a voice over talks of saving them from those twisted trophy hunters...

Post 64 Winchester 6.5PRC broken extractor

I have been told by lots of people that single round feed isn't necessary. As long as your rifle feeds well from the mag you should have no problem. Unfortunately I have found that isn't always the case. Many of the older military actions weren't designed to single feed and converting them to...

    rebarreling a mauser

I agree with VinceMule. You never get your money back out of rebuilding a Mauser. You also never get your money back out of hunting, shooting, camping, hiking, taxidermy, fishing, boating, four wheeling, and almost anything else that you enjoy doing.

    calling dogs----

I saw a dark furry creature moving ahead of me in the long grass one time so I took out my fawn distress call and gave a toot. It turned out to be a wolverine and he quickly swapped ends and came running toward me. Last time I will ever do that.

Is there such thing as a Easy sheep Hunt

I live in an area with wild sheep and almost every year some guy driving down a mountain road has a big ram cross the road in front of him so he jumps out and shoots it. Yea, he gets a trophy, but it isn't hunting. I had it happen once and somehow I managed to find an excuse not to shoot it...

Is there such thing as a Easy sheep Hunt

I'm not sure about NWT and the Yukon but in British Columbia it's illegal to transport hunters to their hunting destinations in a helicopter. What is going to happen with all the personal flying devices now beginning to hit the market is will be another question.

    rebarreling a mauser

All my Mausers became shooters but it took a while for some of them. My favourites were in the medium calibers, 338-06, 30-06 Ackley, 9.3x62, even 8mm Mauser and 8-06 Ackley which used original barrels. Shorter rounds sometimes had feeding problems and needed magazine blocks which were awkward...
