I’m currently putting myself a high power competition rifle together for hunter class in 7mm 08 so can’t have a brake. It will also be a hunting rifle for a 12 year old girl. That’s about my limit non brake for 1/4-1/2 moa.
I was all relaxed with a nice slow squeeze when i touched the 300 off. Like I was shooting a br rifle lol. Knew better when I shot the 340 a few years later but still pretty sure it left a slight concussion and some loose fillings. It always amazes me that there are humans that can shoot those...
Ya, I have never shot a newer one without a brake. The 2 wooden ones I shot were a 300 and 340 and both were trying to help friends figure out why they weren’t shooting tight groups. Definitely something I’ll never forget
Those older weatherby’s with those wooden stocks are sure a beautiful rifle. I don’t think a mule can kick near as hard though. Glad to see the brake worked excellent
Weatherby definitely has it figured out. I think the 6.5-300 is their long range weapon with the ability to shoot the long bullets accurately and fast. Just have to be careful at the shorter ranges. I used the amp annealer and had no issues with brass life with weatherby brass. I’ve thought...
Ya, it wouldn’t surprise me that they have them dialed in now. The vanguard my brother gave me was pretty early on and I believe I did run a box of 130’s through it for the brass. If memory serves it shot pretty decent but had some room for improvement. It’s sitting in a safe in Montana and...
I think Weatherby has the 257/300 dialed in perfectly with their premium factory ammunition. The 257 is the only rifle out of quite a few that I don’t feel I can squeeze anything more out of with handloads. I even have the dies and 110’s been sitting on the shelf. I call them plug and play. I...
I remember shaking my head when the 6.5 prc came out and a lot of guys were having problems with the brass when they were pushing for max velocity. I have no idea what the round count is on that poor vanguard because it’s just way too fun and easy to shoot but I never had any trouble working up...
I think some of the problem is, because of the higher velocities, the bullets need to be a tougher design. I suspect some of the long range bullets didn’t fair too well at closer ranges when they were out testing them. I think hammer bullets are a really good choice not only because they’re...
Oh jeeze! Ya, grandfather. I’m sure as time goes on and bullet/powder designs improve they’ll offer more choices. Maybe someday they’ll have the 6.5-300 premium ammunition dialed in like the 257/300.
I’m not sure. I’m guessing the ones in the 50’s were a slower twist and a little easier on the jackets? I’m going off of memory but I think they did some stuff to the forcing cone? I really don’t think Adam ( or anyone?) is going to poke his chest out and compare himself to his old man.
I’m guessing he’s referring to the issues they had to correct when they first deployed it in production. If I remember, it was tearing apart bullets and accuracy sucked. I don’t think Adam Weatherby is a bad person. Im sure he feels small in the shadow his father created and glad to see him...
Ya, I felt a bit sorry for nosler. I'm sure it's a dandy cartridge. My brother bought me a vanguard shortly after it came out while I was recovering from knee surgery to keep me occupied. He took it back after I developed the 156 Berger load for it lol. If I remember correctly, they had problems...
