Identify a marking on my Barrel ??

I would say the first marking is a year code and the last four are the production number that is probably recorded by the activity that replaced the barrel.

    plastic flow of primer material

Federal cases have been of the soft side for over 30 years. About 1990 two Federal engineers stopped by Camp Perry and I got introduced to them and I asked them why their cases were so soft and they said it was a cost of production savings. The more brass is moved in case forming the harder it...

Is it possible for the bore and the chamber to be non-concentric ?

Assuming you are going to cut your own chamber (as I do) when I get a new barrel blank in I chuck it up with 4 jaw chucks on both ends of lathe head. I have pilots turned for the caliber I am chambering and I place them in both ends of barrel and use a dial indicator to get both ends turning on...

Practice Rifle .223 or 6.5 creedmoor

I am with TheSouthpaw on 223. If you reload get some 80 gr Sierra Matchkings and get a Sierra loading manual and look for the "Accuracy Load" at the bottom of the page. I did it and per page 222 of the 5th edition it calls for 23.5 gr Vihta Vouri and gives around 2500 FPS from a AR15. If...

    Fireforming help needed

It would appear your new cases are sized down too far on shoulder giving you a headspace problem. I have had that happen and I seated the bullets further out so the case head stays in contact with the bolt face and fired them and they came out fine.

    Your SHTF mandatory gun list.

I would start off with 22 LR with a standard velocity ammo because if you are hunting you can do it quietly so as not to draw attention to you position. Next up would be 357 Mag revolver with 180 gr. to 200 gr handloads that will give you a in the front and out the back wound cavity which the...

    "Rebounding" NATO 7.62 brass???

Here is what you need to know about annealing cases. All you need is a propane torch and variable speed electric drill and a case holder.

5.56 Nato convertion in 223 Rem

Since folks here are basically hunters round life on barrels is probably not a problem. For those that load a lot ball propellant is generally more erosive on barrels than stick propellant. Case in point, during the M16A1E1 (adopted as M16A2) the initial test ammo with 62 gr bullets loaded by...

    "Rebounding" NATO 7.62 brass???

Several things come into play. First off I am not aware of any machinegun and lets loaded rounds sit in a barrel be it hot or cold. Think about it, you have a barrel that is really hot and you chamber you are begging for a "cook off" which occurs when the round gets to around 400 deg F. In...

    Hard bolt Lift

Several things may be going on with your rifle. 1. is it new and fired very little? 2. is the bolt hard to lift when chamber is empty? 3. on the ammo you are using does the bolt close easily or do you have to force it down to close the bolt? If the rifle is new make sure it is unloaded and...

Remington 700 picks and choses when to fire

Strikers (firing pins) are generally OK but their springs take a set and get shorter delivering less striker energy and velocity. https://www.gunsprings.com/ Go here and you will find they generally make 3 springs for most rifles, FACTORY , stronger spring and a much stronger spring. I...

    One Gun?

If you are only going to be hunting and not be out burning 50 rounds of magnum ammo at a shot the 300 WM will do just fine. Barrel life as compared to 30.06 is only about to be about 10% of what you will get running magnum loads. It gets worse with 7MM mag and the copper fouling will likely go...

Making .270 out of 30-06 brass?

I realize this is a rather outdated thread but thought I would pass on experience I had with Lapua 30.06 brass. I won the Palma Trophy Match at Camp Perry in 85 and 86 using new Lapua brass and every one I shot did well but several of them had the primers fall out when I opened the bolt. My...
