I use a Savage 116 with 22” 1-10”twist barrel. I shoot factory Hornady ELD-X 110 gr. It is absolutely the most accurate round I have tried and hammers deer and antelope out to 500 yards. Inside of 200yards it looks like a grenade went off inside of the chest cavity. I believe this is due to...
They shoot about 3/4" groups at 100 yards out of my Savage 116 with 22" 1 in 10". This is my Mule Deer and Antelope rifle. Anything under 200 yards looks like a grenade went off inside the chest. Beyond 200 yards the bullet makes a nice mushroom.
I have CDS scopes on a 30-06 and 25-06. I have used both out to 550 yards and they both work. I have mine cut for 5000 ft elevation and 50°f. I haven't hunted above 5500 ft but have hunted to 0°f and haven't had a problem.
I'll add leather kevlar lined gloves to the cactus avoidance gear. I got mine at a police supply store. Your guide will be the best person for gear suggestions. I usually wear blue jeans and a hooded sweatshirt. I normally hunt the 2nd week of October in southeastern WY.
A new Rural King opens close to here not long ago. They had 20 boxes of 6.8 Western ammo on the shelf. I have seen some reloading components around too. If there were rifles available, I think I would buy one.
I have never hunted Montana, but I hope this goes down. It will force the normal hunter to go elsewhere. I'm sure the outfitters will raise their prices to take advantage of this too.
I don't have a velocity for my rifle. I'm glad we were in a fenced pasture, or the buck could have gotten away. We watched him run the fence around but he couldn't get under it, or I don't think we would have found him.
