I have been shooting and hunting since age 8 , the year of 1958 .
Reloading since 1963 for shotguns , 1970 for pistols , and 1973 for rifles .
I have always enjoyed shooting long-range , well before I knew about ballistic-drop charts , and in my yearly hunts to New Mexico or Colorado , my family ( father and brothers ) and friends would dedicate 1 full day of our hunt to shooting long range at rocks or other inanimate objects , using " Kentucky windage and elevation " , and ALWAYS standing non-supported , no rest of any kind . Distances were unknown ( un-measured by any type of range-finder ) , but always based on how far that all of us could see the target object .
Later , after all shooting had ceased , we would drive a vehicle out to the target , measuring the distance by vehicle odometer , and always the mileage was from 0.4 miles out to 1.2 miles which approximates to 700 - 2000 yards . Of course , the targets were NOT MOA sized , generally they were deer or elk sized rocks . But , we DID hit them on occasions .
It was not until 2006 that I got into true Long-Range shooting , and the science behind it , AND the EXPENSE involved .
