I would think over the McSwirly you could use a two part urethane, it definitely would be tough and achieve the high gloss finish you want.

Len, I don't think they meant to not use clearcoat, but meant to use clearcoat compatible with the base, enamel over enamel, lacquer...

Here are a couple I’ve done with Rustoleum (Testors). One is ABS and one is carbon fiber. Its easy. Prep is important.
