Proper use of rear windage screws in bases??

Windage adjustable bases are a terrible concession, and I wouldn't use them. You would be much better off to chunk those and get a different kind.....

Optical Center, canted bases, mounting questions....

Also, stop thinking in inches. Start thinking in MOA.

Optical Center, canted bases, mounting questions....

Zero your rifle with 0 degrees on the rings. Find out how many MOA you lost for that 100 yard zero, then use the ring inserts to gain that back leaving 5 MOA or so. You want "optical center" to be at the farther ranges, not close ones.....

    Is this common? SMK

Uniforming the Meplates would improve the consistency of SMK's upsetting. Here is a picture I just took showing the inconsistency of the tips- In my experience the ones that look like the left bullet perform very well, opening quickly and consistently. The ones that look like the...

accuracy from long range under 10 lb guns?

Buffalobob, I would completely agree that somewhere around the 1K mark things become exponentially more difficult, especially in high winds. 7-9lb rigs are diffidently not optimized for 900 yard shots. They are generalist rifles that are wonderful to carry and work extremely well...

accuracy from long range under 10 lb guns?

Wasn't my gun. However if I were to start over that would be the direction I would be leaning for an all-around rifle. Shooting off of packs, the ones I have experience with had about the same percentage of first round hits as the 12-14lb guns. Some of the Montana's have exibited reletivly...

    Is this common? SMK

Between pulling the trigger myself and spotting for others I have seen several hundred deer shot with SMK's. Most were with the 168, 175, 190, and 220gr 30cals out of 308's, 300WM's, 300RUM, and a 300 Tomahawk. They work, and most of the time very well, however they can be very unpredictable...

accuracy from long range under 10 lb guns?

It should not be a problem to get any custom/semi-custom rifle to consistently hit 1MOA targets, no matter the weight. Matter of fact it shouldn't be a problem to get several factory guns to do it. A 7.5lb all up, 7mm WSM Montana that is capable of killing big game from 0-1K is backpacking...

    My 280 - Updated!

Re: My 280 Nice rifle. Have to say I personally liked the black/stainless better, however it looks good in brown. How where you adjusting for range?

What magnification do you prefer for 600+ yards on game?

The Leupold VX2/Vari-X II 6-18x is a good scope, and probably the best you can buy in the price range. I've used mine to kill a lot of animals, with more being on the far side of 400 then the near. Thing is, the rifle that it was on now wears a Leupold 6X with M3 turrets as one doesn't 18x for...

    Budget Spotting Scope

The only spotter that I have used that is worth the money (?) in that price range is the Burris 20x50 Compact.

    Breaking in a new barrel???

Open bolt. Insert round. Close bolt. Pull trigger. Clean when groups start opening up.

    Is this common? SMK

If your going to take shots like that, stick to the TSX's. Ballistic-Tips will have significantly less penetration the either SMK's or TSX's.

    Tennessee Rut?

Your welcome. Nailing the rut in TN is a bit hard as it can vary quite a bit depending on where your at, and also what the weather is doing. Kind of an on again, off again deal. I've seen them chasing in the first Muzzle loader season, which is the beginning of November, and last year I...
