    Long-ish range prairie dog caliber?

Think seriously about the 25-06 or 257 Roberts. And I mean seriously. With the kind of winds your talking about you need a lot of weight in a very fast bullet. You can run anything from 80 grains or so up to 120 and they are excellent at 600 yards. Dropped many a coyote and whitetail with...

    Shooting How Far?

Something I have not seen a lot of discussion about on this posting: DIRECTION of the wind means a lot as to whether or not you choose to shoot at a long range animal. I hunt the power line at my property and an 800 shot is ok even on a windy day. The wind basically blows right up the power...

Ok I am not a big fan of the 6.5 Creedmore

All at 500 yards? Doubt it.

Ok I am not a big fan of the 6.5 Creedmore

Look up the ballistics on it. It beats the 243 at 500 and barley beats the 25-06 (257). All calibers after that, 270 on up beats it and creates a bigger wound channel via diameter. Notice they did not mention the 7MM in the charts I read cause they would embarrass the 6.5. 500 on an elk? Not me.

Ok I am not a big fan of the 6.5 Creedmore

Only deer I have ever lost is with a 243. Just do not like the 6mm or the 6.5. And the .257 has my vote. I killed around 60 deer with a 25-06. Never lost anything I shot at and never went more than 30 yards. Now into the 7MM and love it.

    "difficult" calibers

Rifleman556 is dead on in my opinion. The 7mm Remington Mag is easy to load, great bullet selection, good brass available, and deadly out to 6-700 yards. I have been loading the 7MM for many years and love mine. You can put one of the new harmonic dampers on your barrel and tune in the...

Let's talk about 2 mile cartridges

If you are going to shoot 2 miles in Italy, you best shoot North to South because East to West width is only about 1-1/2 miles. At least it seemed that way when I was there.:p

Ok I am not a big fan of the 6.5 Creedmore

I just cannot get excited as some people seem to be about the 6.5 creedmore. I have never been a real fan of the 243 either. I am speaking specifically about using these calibers at 4-500 plus yards. I think a heavier bullet and a bigger diameter is in order for long range shots on elk...

Are high powered scopes really necessary for hunting?

I have been hunting out to 800 yards for 30 years. Started with a 3-9 Leuopold and have grown older as my scope did. As my eyes slowly started getting worse I went to a 6.5 to 20 Leuopold. It works wonders when you have a buck out at 500 yards standing there with brown brush cover and his...

At what point are you done with load development?

Personally I don't plan on stopping until I same hole 10 shots in a row at 100 yards. I would not be reloading at 75 yrs. old if I didn't love to play with big boy toys.

The old 25-06 Remington and 270 Winchester shot flatter than 6.5 CM

I have killed elk, black bear and mule and whitetails with my 25-06 and my 7MM mag and I think the 6.5 creedmore needs to fade away. I do not think it can compare to the 25-06 at 500 yards and I haven't even looked up the ballistics tables. Just my feel. I have dropped bear, elk and deer in...

    Need some guidance..

Anyone shooting at an Elk at 1500 yards is not an ethical hunter. I suppose it is possible. It is highly improbable however. I suspect if your buddy told you that he was grossly over estimating the yardage or his range finder is way way off. If you ask most people to guess yardage of an Elk...

    WHAT CALIBER???

I would tell you if you meant 800 yard shots you best be ready to buy reloads from a guy who knows what he is doing or be very lucky and get a factory round that shoots well in your gun (which may not be possible). If not you are going to have to have someone who knows what they are doing...

    Your Ultimate 500 Yard Rig

I would stay with my stainless Winchester 7MM mag with browning adjustable boss and Leuopold 6.5-20 power target scope. I have killed many a white tail and black bear with it at 4-500 yards. Loaded with hand loads Sierra 160 grain Game King BTHP bullet. I have it sighted in for maximum point...

    Is This Excessive Pressure??

This is an excellent answer and a very good piece of advice. Everyone should heed this.
